- The Play:?"Trumpets of the Lord" is an adaptation for the musical stage from the late James Weldon Johnson's book "God's Trombones," a collection of seven sermons in free verse from American Negro folklore. The musical is set in the backwoods churches of the deep South and is a blend of traditional music (spirituals) and the impassioned poetry of the sermons. He was the first Negro admitted to the Florida bar since Reconstruction days. He edited "The Book of Negro Poetry," as well as several collections of spirituals. In addition to "God's Trombones," he wrote the novel "The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man." Among his other literary works are "Black Manhattan," his own autobiography, and several books of poetry.?NET Playhouse - "Trumpets of the Lord" is a National Educational Television production in association with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. It was produced by Theodore Mann, Howard Schwartz and Will B. Sandler, with Amherst Productions. Executive producers for the telecast: Craig Gilbert for NET and Robert Allen for the CBC. Pianist - Michael Hinton. FILLER INFORMATION: The filler to be used with Trumpets of the Lord, is a 9-minute color short entitled Sonny, by an American filmmaker Richard Slote. Sonny is a musical study of Sonny Greer, Duke Ellingtons famous drummer for the past 50 years. Greer plays Mood Indigo, and C Jam, accompanied by his voice-over reminiscences of the Ellington era, intercut with stills from the period. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
