Episode Description
The military sustains a heavy lampooning in this British-made comedy about an awkward young genius who is drafted and assigned to British intelligence as a language translator. The time is 1956, and fighting is about to break out in the Middle East over Egypts bid to nationalize the Suez Canal. Back in England, Robert Hawk serious, sensitive, backward in his relationships, especially with women, and with an IQ of 165 reports to the foreign office to work as a Russian language clerk. Within a short time he is miserable. He despises his co-workers and they in turn consider him strange. And even worse, his attempts to impress his parents and relatives with his important position are to no avail they refuse to take him seriously. As the Middle East trouble erupts, emotional pressures on Hawk force him to take drastic action. He decides to prove his importance by taking top secret documents out of the office to show his brother. Episode Description
90 minute piece, produced by London Weekend Television and initially schedule to be distributed by NET in 1971. It was originally shot in color. The work was scheduled to broadcast as episode 221 of NET Playhouse on January 7, 1971; however, due to technical difficulties they had to replace it with Volpone.
