- Some of televisions most loved characters returned to American screens when Kukla, Fran and Ollie joined NET. The venerable trio, consisting of Fran Allison and her two best puppet friends, were joined by all the Kuklapolitans for new half-hour episodes in color. They were telecast weekly beginning on Wednesday, February 4 at 8 pm EST. Created by puppeteer Burr Tillstrom, Kukla, Fran and Ollie enjoyed a six-year run on network television in the 1950s and returned briefly in the 1961-62 season. The new episodes were produced by NETs Chicago affiliate station, WTTW. The episodes were seen over most of NETs 167 affiliated stations across the United States and in Puerto Rico and American Samoa. Created and animated by Burr Tillstrom, the Kuklapolitans consist of Kukla, Oliver Dragon (Ollie), Ollies cousin, Doloras, Cecil Bill, Madame Ophelia Oogelpuss, Fletcher Rabbit, Beulah the Witch, Col. Richard Crackie, and a new character, Werner the Inch Worm. Kukla, Fran and Ollie was a presentation of National Educational Television, produced by non-commercial station WTTW, Chicago, and the episodes were recorded in color on videotape.
