- Home, a celebrated drama starring two of the worlds great actors Sir Ralph Richardson and Sir John Gielgud has been produced by NET Playhouse with the original cast from the London and Broadway stage. Named the best play of the 1970-71 season by the New York Drama Critics Circle, Home was equally acclaimed in London, where it won the Evening Standard award. The play is author David Storeys compassionate view of the empty lives of four persons in a home for mental patients. Lindsay Anderson, who directed the work on stage, has also directed the TV production. His five-member TV cast is the same as that which opened the play at Londons Royal Court Theatre in July 1970. When Home began its limited New York engagement last November Clive Barnes of the New York Times called the acting and staging as near perfection as can be hoped for. He credited Richardson and Gielgud with two of the greatest performances of two careers that have been among the glories of the English-speaking theater. The play spans a few hours in the lives of two men and two women somewhat beyond their middle years who encounter each other in a garden one morning. It is not immediately obvious that the garden is part of a mental home; only in the subtleties of their conversation and behavior do the characters reveal as Britains Observer termed it their crippled lives and the wintry tenderness possible between them. Richardson and Gielgud will be making a rare joint appearance on American television in Home, although they have worked together countless times, often with the former as star and the latter as director. Home is a production of NET Division, Educational Broadcasting Corporation, produced in cooperation with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
