Description
Episode Description
Participants are Miss Amelia Addae, Gold Coast; Miss Susan Rennie, Union of South Africa; Mr. Mesfin Binega, Ethiopia; Mr. Boniface Offokaja, Nigeria; and Mrs. Waller. The program centers around Mrs. Waller's question, "Are Americans prejudiced in their opinions about Africa?" In replying, the young delegates said: (Boniface)"They most certainly are. How could they be objective about African Negroes when they are so full of prejudice about American Negroes." (Susan)"I come from South Africa, and I disagree with you completely. Americans are prejudiced in favor of native Africans but they are very prejudiced against white people in Africa." (Amelia)"I am getting very confused. How can Americans be prejudiced both for and against Africans at the same time?" (Mesfin)"If I say anything I'll confuse you still more. As an Ethiopian I am prejudiced against both white people and Negroes." (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
Series Description
"World We Want" is a TV discussion series by and for teenagers, but with an appeal to both younger and older audiences. It features 16 to 18 year olds from every corner of the earth, who are spending three months in the New York area as delegates to the New York Herald Tribune Forum. Discussions are presided over by Mrs. Helen Hiett Waller, forum director, with a maximum of encouragement to free expression and a minimum of moderator knows best interference. Programs give appearance of being quite spontaneous. In each of the programs, students discuss problems of concern to America and the world, giving their own point of view a range of diverse subjects. In the first season, which aired in 1954, 30 high school students from 28 countries participated. In the second season, 1955, students from some thirty foreign countries participated. The third season, airing in 1956, featured 33 high school students from as many countries around the world. In the fourth season, which aired in 1957, 33 students, 17 boys and 16 girls, from 33 different countries, participated in the discussions.
