- Episode Description
- Dante Brenna, a guitar student from Switzerland, plays two opposed types of selections for the instrument. First is a Fandanguillo by a contemporary Spaniard, Federico Moreno Torroba, composer best known for his many popular zarzuelas, the traditional Spanish comic opera. This selection, often played by Segovia as an encore number, is one of many in popular idiom by this composer in the Segovia repertory. A Gavotte and Gigue by the German composer and lutenist, Sylvius Leopold Weiss (1686-1750), a European court musician recognized by Handel and Bach, are Brennas next choices. Carl Bernstein of, Detroit, Michigan, plays the colorfully descriptive Asturias by Isaac Albeniz, edited and transcribed by Maestro Segovia. Albeniz (1860-1909), generally recognized as founder of the Spanish National school, was the composer of many atmospheric piano pieces, transcribed for guitar. Segovia Master Class #6 is a 1966 National Educational Television production. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)

- Series Description
- The site for this new National Educational Television cultural affairs series is the city of Santiago de Compostela, a famous European shrine in northwest Spain often called the Jerusalem of the West. The artist is the 73-year old virtuoso Andres Segovia, whose name is synonymous with the classical guitar. For a two-month period (August and September 1965), an NET team headed by producer Nathan Kroll recorded classes conducted by Segovia with a student body of 17 drawn from the best talents of eight countries, including the United States. Segovia Master Class, consisting of 14 half-hour classes, is the fourth Master Class series produced by NET and the first recorded abroad. The first was the widely acclaimed Casals Master Class, also produced by Nathan Kroll. Lotte Lehmann and Jascha Heifetz were featured in the others. Segovia Master Class was filmed in the 14th century Hostal de Los Reyes Catolicos, an imposing structure once a royal hospital, and converted by Ferdinand and Isabella into a hostel for poor pilgrims. The students are enrolled at the Music Academy founded in Santiago de Compostela in 1958 by Segovia and Jose Miguel Ruiz-Morales, then in charge of cultural affairs for the Spanish government. Aspiring students pay their own passage, but once accepted they receive free room, board and tuition. The last program in the series included the final competition for most deserving student. The prize is a guitar handcrafted to Segovias specifications. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
