Description
Episode Description
A very young semaphore was assigned to guard a school crossing and he loved it. Later, he was transferred to a big intersection downtown, and then the trouble started. The work of changing from red-to-green-to-yellow every few seconds was just too much for him; he longed for the school crossing where he could flash yellow for hours at a time and stay red for a whole minute or two at a time when school let out. Desperately, the young semaphore tried to keep up with the other three corner signs, but growing tired, he started flashing yellow all by himself in the middle of rush hour. Brakes squealed, and a marshmallow truck banged into a car hurting nobody but ruining the marshmallows. It was then the people in charge of semaphores had a serious talk with the silly semaphore and explained what a serious and important job he had in protecting people and keeping traffic flowing. The silly semaphore, however, was allowed to flash yellow all night long just so he assumed his responsibilities in the daytime. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
Series Description
Magic Doorways are stories written and told by Betty Girling, director of the Minnesota School of the Air, especially for imaginative children. They are invited to meet Betty at the Story Wagon for her stories of people like themselves, stories of mythical royalty, stories of things and stories of flowers. One of the basic ideas of the series is the belief that the imaginative children's television can, with animal props, suggest the story without depriving the child of the embroidery of his own imagination. The emphasis then is not on "recreating" situations, but on maintaining a spirit and setting though which suggestions will serve to stimulate the varied personalities of the audience. Magic Doorways was produced for the NET by KUOM, the University of Minnesota. This series of 65 fifteen-minute episodes was originally shot in black and white on kinescope.
