- This episode studies two poets who look more toward the Orient than to Europe as a framework for relating their experience. Interviewed at the UCLA Berkeley Poets conference and in his studio, Gary Snyder discusses and reads his poetry. He was born in San Francisco in 1930, grew up in Washington-Oregon, obtained his BA at Reed College, Oregon in 1951, went on to Japanese and Chinese studies at Berkeley in 1953-56, and spent most of the next 8 years in Japan. Poems he reads are: Hay for the Horses, Above Pate Valley, The Market, Section Six, from the Logging Section of Myths and Texts, and Hop Scotch. Philip Whalen is a friend of Gary Snyder and the two often go on long pack trips together. Whalen was born in Portland, Oregon in 1923, served in the US Army Air Force, 1943-46, and obtained his BA at Reed College in 1951. In this episode he is filmed in his home and in the courtyard of the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco where at Rodins Thinker statue he reads Homage to Rodin. Other poems read are: A Very Complicated Way of Saying Appearances Deceive and Since You Ask Me a prose piece.
