Description
Program Description
World War II focused the attention of the United States on the need for a unified national intelligence service. In 1947, President Truman signed the National Security Act, which created the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Bush discusses the responsibilities of the director of central intelligence (DCI), the role of the CIA, and the central importance of national security. He also talks about secrecy, accountability, and having faith in the strength and effectiveness of our democratic institutions. A transcript of the talk is in the book "Each a Mighty Voice" (Heyday Books, 2004).
