Description
Episode Description
This episode takes a look at medicine as practiced behind the Iron Curtain. Filmed in color by a California internist, Dr. Henry Mayer, Soviet Medicine ranges the Soviet Union from the great medical centers of Moscow to provincial hospitals where medical anachronisms such as leech therapy exist side-by-side with the most advanced clinical techniques. The film takes note of the Soviet emphasis on free medical services such as pediatrics and child care and convalescent and sanatorium facilities. There is also a report from Moscows national Cancer Institute. Major differences between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. medical scenes are pointed out, including the great Soviet stress on medical training of teams rather than individuals; Russian emphasis on physical therapy of all types; and less elaborate medical record-keeping in hospitals, without the electronic systems characteristic of American hospital administration. The film also illustrates the extent to which the health of the Soviet citizen is considered a public responsibility exemplified by the required periodic health checkups and the comprehensive system of neighborhood clinics, to which all children are assigned at birth. Spectrum Soviet Medicine is a production of National Educational Television. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
