Description
Episode Description
Huston Smith interviews Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, who is currently active in educational, sociological and political affairs, in New York City and Dr. and Mrs. Walt Rostow professor of economic history at the Center for International Affairs at MIT, in Cambridge on our relations with our Western Allies. Are they an asset or an embarrassment? Is the alliance as it should be; if not, why not, and what might be done to improve it? (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
Series Description
This series is a thorough examination of the sense of values of a number of Americans, as well as the opinions of experts on what values should guide Americans as they form opinions on foreign policy, national domestic issues, inter-personal relations and basic philosophy. The series of interviews is based on the assumption that culture is an important factor is determining behavior, and that culture stems from a people's sense of what is desirable, good or right; that is, its sense of values. The series is designed to help the viewer to consider how values affect living, as well as the alternatives to its present sense of values. The episodes 18 through 33, which were distributed first, present some of the larger social questions which Americans are called upon to answer today. Distinguished public figures, including noted philosophers, diplomats, economists, teachers, newsmen, describe these questions and present solutions based on those fundamental premises which they have derived for themselves. The series does not pretend to give the viewer a final solution to the problems presented; its aim is to show how different people define these problems, and what answers they have found. Episodes 1 through 17 describe some facets of daily American life. Representatives of various groups in American society - parents, teenagers, poets - discuss their lives and the factors which have influenced them in making various decisions. This portion, like the other, presents a description rather than an evaluation of the attitudes and beliefs of the persons interviewed. Hosting episodes 1 through 17 are Richard F. Hartnell, Jr., a freelance producer, writer and director; and Dr. Ralph Patrick, a social anthropologist who has taught at Harvard, Washington University in St. Louis, and the University of North Carolina. Hosting episodes 18 through 33 is Dr. Huston Smith, professor of Philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who has also taught at Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Colorado, and the University of Denver. Richard F. Hartzell, Jr., produced the series for the Washington University Social Science Institute and the Office of Television Activities in cooperation with KETC, St. Louis. This series of 33 half-hour episodes was originally recorded on film.
