Description
Episode Description
Dr. Harbaugh describes the unceasing war between land and the sea and illustrates the work of ocean waves in shaping the seacoast. With Dr. Howard again as his guest, he investigates the origin of such seashore features as beaches, spits, and sea cliffs. Dr. Arthur D. Howard is professor of geology at Stanford University, who served as geologist with the Fourth Byrd Expedition to Antarctica in 1946-47. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
Series Description
This series investigates that thin skin on the apple, the crust of the Earth of which the mountains, the valleys, and the seas are made. Each episode investigates one of the processes that go to shape these features on the Earths surface. These investigations lead the viewer from the plain dirt of his own back yard to the snowcapped heights of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. Such processes as erosion, weathering, folding, uplift, and faulting are discussed along with the part each plays in a specific and important role in a great cycle that has been at work for more than a billion years in shaping the face of the earth. The host of the series, Dr. John W. Harbaugh, is assistant professor of geology at Stanford University. His professional experience has been almost equally divided between commercial and academic work. Before coming to Stanford, he was employed by the Carter Oil Company as a geologist and by the Humble Oil Company as a consultant. He has worked with the US Geological Survey in Colorado and Utah. He holds BS and MS degrees from the University of Kansas and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin. He has taught at the University of Kansas and Centenary College. He is a specialist in stratigraphy as applied to oil exploration, and most of his research has been concerned with the possibility of oil production from limestone rocks. As a result of this research he has had several articles published in technical journals. The series was produced by KQED, San Francisco and Stanford University. The 10 half-hour episodes that comprise the series were originally recorded on videotape. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
