- Program Description
- This program, recorded on the campus of Villanova University at the Fieldhouse Auditorium, presents the third annual Villanova Intercollegiate Jazz Festival. Host for the festival is renowned band leader Stan Kenton. The Festival, a contest among collegiate jazz organizations in the eastern United States, is divided into three categories big band, small group, and vocal. A panel of well-known judges selected the finalists from audition tapes submitted from 42 different colleges. Chosen in the big band category: The Barbary Coast Orchestra from Dartmouth College led by Reed Wasson, the West Chester State College Criterions led by Bob Curnow, Duquesne University Orchestra led by Pail Hubinon and Ray De Fade. In the small group category: The Mike Michaels Trio from the University of Pennsylvania and the Jazz Disciples from the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. In the vocal category: the Harlequins from Duke University the only group entered in this category. This February 22, 1963, television concert included the highlights of each groups performance, interviews with some of the student musicians, and an interview with the producer of the Festival. Host Stan Kenton, renowned big band leader and jazz innovator, has been in the front ranks of modern American music since 1940. Kenton is currently leading a 23-piece band; he and his group have appeared all over the United States and in Europe. Mr. Kenton has served as a personal advisor to Villanova since the inception of the Jazz Festival three years ago. He comments that he is firmly committed to the cause of university jazz and feels that the most original and significant developments in modern music will come from the university music departments across the country. The panel of judges is made up of Sid Mark, WHAT-FM, Philadelphia; Bob Share, Berklee School of Music; John Hammond, Columbia Records; Bill Coss, Down Beat magazine; Rev. Norman J. OConnor; and Sid Bernstein, General Artists. Villanova Intercollegiate Jazz Festival is a 1963 production of WHYY-TV, Philadelphia. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
