Description
Episode Description
The aphorisms of the Preacher in the Book of Ecclesiastes have given laymen and scholars of the Bible considerable difficulty. How do they fit into Biblical literature? When and why were they written? What messages have they for us? Dr. Boyd does his usual fine job of informing the viewer of the background and of guiding him in understanding complicated passages. Among other interesting points is Dr. Boyds suggestion that the Book of Ecclesiastes may be understood as the first example of the personal essay, one that contains ideas on the best way to live and the goals to pursue. Series Description
From WUNC in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, comes a series that explore the literature and history of the Bible. Intended for an adult audience, the episodes examine both the well-known and the less familiar stories and personages of the Bible in the light of new work in archaeology, science and higher criticism. The orientation is non-sectarian and requires only some interest in the Judeo-Christian heritage of the Western world. On occasion, photographs, documents, and drawings are used to illustrate the lecture. Dr. Bernard Boyd, the host for this series is head of the Department of Religion at the University of North Carolina. He also has taught at Presbyterian College and Davidson College, and for two years during World War II he was a chaplain in the Marine Corps. He holds degrees in theology from Princeton University and the Union Theological Seminary. The 13 half-hour episodes that comprise this series were originally recorded on kinescope.
