Episode Description
Canadian poet Leonard Cohen who now resides on the island of Hydra in Greece, is shown in his native city of Montreal. The program explores Cohens childhood and his subsequent development as one of Canadas leading new writers. The film takes viewers to the house Cohen was brought up in as well as to the places of Montreal he enjoys frequenting his favorite bistro, a three dollar-a-day hotel, the public park, the exclusive section called Westmount, and a Greek grocery store. Cohen himself is shown at a recording session, at public readings of his poetry, displaying home movies of his childhood, and commenting on university life (he was elected chairman of his colleges debating society and then refused to hold a debate). He also reflects on his visit to Cuba, his girlfriend in Greece, his obsession with danger, advertisements offering to rid people of their unwanted hair, and his friends and their personalities. Cohen, a graduate of Canadas McGill University, is the author of three volumes of poetry The Spice-Box of Earth, Let Us Compare Mythologies, and Flowers for Hitler as well as two novels The Favorite Game and Beautiful Losers. He is twice winner of the Canada Council Award, has contributed poetry to the Saturday Review as wells as to numerous Canadian literary magazines, and frequently reads his poetry at both American and Canadian universities. Series Description
This series focuses on the private vision of the creative person. Each program is devoted to a 20th century artist whose special qualities of imagination, taste, originality, intelligence, craftsmanship, and individuality have marked him as a pace-setter in his field. These artists --- whose fields span the entire gamut of the art world --- include filmmaker Jean Renoir, poet John Ciardi, industrial designer Raymond Loewy, Hollywood producer-director King Vidor, noted Broadway couple Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, artist Leonard Baskin, humorist James Thurber, satirist Robert Osborn, Indian musician Ravi Shankar, poet P. G. Wodehouse, painter Georges Braque, former ballet star Olga Spessivtzeva, Rudolf Bing, and Marni Nixon. The format for each program has been geared to the individual featured; Performance, interview, and documentary technique are employed interchangeably. The Creative Person is a 1965 production of National Educational Television. The N.E.T. producers are Jack Sameth, Jac Venza, Lane Slate, Thomas Slevin, Brice Howard, Craig Gilbert, and Jim Perrin.
