Description
Episode Description
The two faces of Japan one, the fare of a dynamic, affluent Western nation; the other, a blend of Oriental tradition and philosophy, of unchanging ritual and a concept of life based on a mystical and feudal past. Can they be reconciled? Are they accurate reflections of this puzzling land? The episode centers on four Japanese: Shigeko Yamasaki, a chic young model, typical of Japan's modern career girl, who nonetheless is prepared to accept a marriage arranged by her parents, who combines jazz and baseball with the ordered ritual of the tea ceremony; Seichi Kubota, a student at Tokyo University and a member of the militant student organization that staged riots against President Eisenhower in 1960, who combines discussion of Marxism with observance of the Shinto religion; Uzuki Shoji, a riveter in a modern shipyard in Kobe who once served in the Japanese Imperial Navy, a man whose family is run in strictly traditional ways; Shizu Yamaoka, a housewife in the suburbs of Osaka, who is at home in a modern supermarket and yet is content to be lower in the social scale than her youngest son. By examining the daily lives and activities of these men and women, the viewer comes to understand the ambivalence of this country of more than 92 million people. The episode also includes highly significant interviews with the Japanese Prime Minister, Hayheo Ikeda, and the late Inejiro Asanuma, leader of the Socialist opposition, who was assassinated in October, 1960. They discuss such vital questions as the psychological impact of Hiroshima, the extent to which Western culture is being assimilated, and the possibilities of future conflict between Japan and the West. THE TWO FACES OF JAPAN was prepared by Associated-Rediffusion, Ltd., of England, one of the participants in the Intertel agreement with NET. The director, Peter Morley spent two months in Japan working with Japanese camera crews who knew almost no English and announced their difficulties with disconcertingly broad grins. The episode was written by Cyril Bennet, and is introduced by Tom Harrison. Note: Tom Harrisson has done considerable anthropological study in Borneo, an area with?which he is most familiar. During World War II, while on duty with the Australian armed forces, he organized a Borneo guerrilla force and became well known for his ability to get along with and train the Borneo natives.
