Description
Episode Description
You better get ready cause here I come. With these words, Silverbird is born. A family of seven guitar-thumping, vibrating Indians performing their first rock concert at Long Island University is presented in Silverbird: Birth of a Navajo Rock Group. The program is a musical odyssey involving the seven members of the Ortiz family three adults and four teenagers who comprise Silverbird. Using the name of The Coronados, the adults have been singing together on the resort circuit since the mid-50s. The teenagers have recently formed their own rock group, title The Real Americans. And since last year the seven have been discovering their own sound as Silverbird in their Dumont (NJ) homes. In addition to the concert booking, they are seen performing both at home and at their first Capitol recording session. They are heard in many of their own numbers, ranging from cool rock (Sonny, Would You, Here I Come) to Indian protest songs (Broken Treaties, Custers Last Stand). In addition, the film visits Grossingers in the Catskills, where the Coronados are heard singing in a popular vein. Fanfare Silverbird - The Birth of a Navajo Rock Group is a production of the NET Division, Educational Broadcasting Corporation. (Description adapted from documents in the NET Microfiche)
