- Episode Description
- The episode will show former Vice President Hubert Humphrey meeting with his first students at Macalester College, St. Paul, Minnesota. Mr. Humphrey has accepted a shared professorship at Macalester College and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He will divide his time between the two institutions and will take part in classroom discussion, lectures, and seminars in various disciplines for both students and faculty. Mr. Humphrey was graduate from the University of Minnesota in 1939, and taught political science at Macalester in 1943-44. His first class at Macalester, an undergraduate college with a student body of 1,700 will be in political science decision making in the executive government. He will also participate in a free-for-all question-and-answer session with 250 students of the college, as part of the Political Emphasis Week at Macalester. In a heated question-answer session with his students at Macalester College, Mr. Humphreys remarks as a follows: On the Chicago convention: I was a victim of it .... The tragedy of Chicago could be characteristic of what will happen throughout the country. Mr. Humphrey cites one solution: better-paid, better-educated policemen. On Mayor Daley: Daley didnt break his heart for me . He may not be a very sensitive mayor, but hes not a crook. On the crisis in the universities: Many of the colleges and universities are very backward in practices and administrative structure and curriculum in terms of what is needed for a student today. In non-academic things, I think students ought to have the majority voice. On law and order as a campaign issue: Law and order was a phrase for repression. It was really, Lets crack down on the Negro, thats what they were really saying, and I refused to say it. On Negro rights: I think that you have to have inequality of opportunity for those who have been denied it for a long time. On Administration policy and the Vice President: Once you fix a course, its very difficult to unfix it Ill take my share of blame for whatever mistakes weve made in policy, even though youll find the vice presidency isnt exactly the most powerful office in the world. On the draft: The present Selective Service system is outrageous Theres a great merit in a volunteer army. But the way to change the policy is not by burning your draft card that doesnt mean youre going to get out of the Army. On the upcoming semester: Your tail will be dragging. On Mr. Humphreys presence at the college: If I had had all the answers, I wouldnt be here; Id be president. On his running mate: My vice presidential nominee wasnt from South Carolina or someplace else. He was Ed Muskie and I selected him, and I prefer to have the right to decide who are my friends. On the poverty program: Theres been more hue and cry about the mismanagement of the poverty program than about the fact that they build airplane engines that wouldnt lift an airplane off the ground, and they cancel the contract and say it was engineering experimentation. On the Nigerian civil war: I helped get some cargo planes to bring food to the Biafrans. NET JOURNAL New Man on Campus is a NET production.
