Description
Episode Description
Life for Louis Bert has been a long series of minor ups and sordid downs a precarious existence maintained on the edge of the criminal underworld by wit and charm. At the moment, however, everything seems to be set for a run of good living. He has won the heart of middle-aged Constance who has enough money to keep him, and he has even managed to persuade her to extend her patronage to his sister," Loulou who, in fact is a prostitute he stole from the leader of a gang he helped in a post-office raid. Louis has found comfort and security, and sees no reason why he should not be able to continue in his new life. But the past has been spent too recklessly, and soon destroys the good life in Constance's apartment in Nice. At a birthday party given for Constance by an old lover, Loulou notices some of the gang watching. Louis also sees a detective who has been showing an interest in him since the post-office robbery, and he decides that the time has come to disappear for a while. That night, in an attempt to silence him, the gang raids Constance's apartment. And when Louis returns two days later, he finds the place a shambles, with Constance lying on the bed with her throat cut. Knowing that suspicion will certainly center on him, Louis panics, drags the body into the bathroom, and goes to work on it with a knife. Finally he tidies the apartment and then sets off to dispose of two heavy suitcases in the harbor. Two weeks later, Louis is arrested and charged with theft, forgery and murder. Although nobody has been found, he is sent to trial. During the proceeding no one produces any evidence in his favor. The record of his misspent life works against him and he is finally sentenced to twenty years penal servitude. Film sequences were done on location in Nice, France.
