- Episode Description
- Art and sculpture on display in this visit to the 18th century are characteristic of the optimism of the Age of Reason. With notable exceptions the etchings of Hogarth, for one this is an age happy exceptions the etchings of Hogarth for one this is an age happy in its belief that through reason and moderation and millennium is at hand. The political painting of David, the salons of De Troy, the sculptures of Houdon all reflect the optimism of Voltaire and the Encyclopedists who would advance mankind by conquering ignorance. The theme of this film shirt from the great palaces like Blenheim and Versailles, to Edinburgh, and to the hills of Virginia where Thomas Jefferson made his home at Monticello in the 1760s. Civilisation is an NET presentation, produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation. Presentation of this program in the United States has been made possible by a grant from the Xerox Corporation.
