- Episode Description
- In Part 1, Jean de Servigny, a young aristocrat, takes a friend, Saval, to spend an evening at the country house of Marquise Obardi. Jean explains the real truth about the Marquise and her house to Saval: the Marquise is not really a Marquise, her guest are not aristocrats but spies, gamblers, adventurers, and expensive women of the demi-monde. However, these facts by no means belittle the Marquises beauty and Saval will inevitably fall in love with her. Jean, on the other hand is greatly attracted to Yvette, the Marquises innocent eighteen-year-old daughter, about whom hes heard so much. They go to the Marquises house and meet the Marquise, Yvette and Kravaloff, Valreali and Belvigne, admirers of Yvettes. Then the Marquise invites Jean and Saval to return and spend a weekend. In Part 2, Jean and Saval return for the weekend. Jean finds hes falling in love with Yvette. He tries to make his feelings known but Yvette refuses to take him seriously. She gets him to take her to a nearby caf. Here Jean faces the reality that Yvette is below his station and that they can never marry. Jean tries to explain this to Yvette and reach an understanding with her. Yvette cannot understand that he is an aristocrat, and she is not. She questions her mother about her status and the Marquises answers are very evasive. Later that night Yvette is shocked to see her mother in the arms of Saval. In Part 3, Yvette is curious about her mothers guests: she questions Jean about them. Jean tells her that theyre mostly frauds. When she questions Jean about her mother, he refuses to answer. Now Yvette has realized the true situation, accuses her mother of being a kept woman, and begs her to give up her way of life, go away with her, and live decently. The Marquise replies that her present way of life is the only way and shes not ashamed of it. Yvette, now confused, upset and heartbroken, attempts suicide. Jean comes to her rescue and now find that Yvette has come to accept the realities of her life. She has suddenly matured in to a grown woman and loving Jean as she does consoles herself with the fact that she and Jean can be as happy as any married couple in their roles of master and mistress.
