Description
Episode Description
For many years old Madame Canut has hated Fevrier, sole living survivor of the wrecked trawler "Telemaque." She believes that he and the other survivors cannibalized her husband in order to live and has brought up her twin sons, Pierre and Charles, to believe this story. When Fevrier is found dead in the harbor, Pierre Canut, now captain of his own trawler, is arrested as the obvious suspect. His brother Charles is convinced of Pierre's innocence, Although Pierre had been with old Fevrier on the night he was killed, there are also other suspects. For one thing, there is Paumelle, a ne'er-do-well, whose father had been also one of the survivors. Paumelle was perfectly capable of blackmailing Fevrier and probably was doing so. Then there is Emma Martens, the local "easy woman" who is suddenly claiming Fevrier's estate on the grounds that she was secretly married to him. Charles decides to do a little investigating on his own, and going to Fevrier's villa, he is surprised to see a window open as though someone is still living there. Finding nothing, he decides to leave. He is not the only visitor, however, for Emma, too, goes there, hunting for the marriage certificate. Suddenly, the terrified woman is confronted with the apparition of the dead man, himself. Fevrier has faked his own death because he is sickened by Madame Canut's eternal persecution and wants to clear out. In a violent argument, Emma stabs him and makes her escape. Paumelle, thinking Fevrier dead, has picked this night to rifle the villa, and it is he who is discovered by Charles and the police. But in the ensuing scuffle he gets away. Knowing that Paumelle and Emma were having an affair, Charles follows Emma as she leaves town, hoping that she will lead him to Paumelle. When Paumelle is finally found by the police, he tells the whole truth. Emma, unable to escape Charles following her to Dieppe, where she had hoped to catch the boat for England, is convinced that he knows she murdered old Fevrier and commits suicide in despair. Pierre is released and the twin brothers are reunited. Filmed sequences of the play were shot on location in Brittany.
