- Series Description
- This series will present a learning experience to preschool and early primary school children through the use of children's fairy and fantasy stories. It is the purpose of this series to acquaint and re-acquaint the children with the classic stories which are often neglected in modern times. By the use of an explanatory technique showing both the good and evil in the stories, the child will be exposed to certain moral principles not commonly brought out in a children's program. By having as one of the principles in the series a puppet dog, Poindexter, who has many of the same characteristics as the viewing child, a certain rapport can be established between the viewer and the puppet. Tom Tichenor, professional puppeteer, created Poindexter and is responsible for the series. Included in the series are several original stories by Tom Tichenor. Poindexter works into many of his tales educational, safety, healthful and moral concepts. Four puppet assistants aided Mr. Tichenor in his animations, Diane Parrish, Emma Hayes Wade, Al Gresham, and Al Wood. The series is the first to be produced for National Educational Television by WKNO-TV, Memphis. The creator of Poindexter and of this series is Tom Tichenor. He first became interested in marionettes when he was in junior high school in Nashville. In January, 1947, he joined the staff of the Nashville Public Library where for eleven years he has given weekly performances of his puppets. When WSM-TV, a Nashville commercial station, began operations in 1950, Tom Tichenor and his Marionettes moved in. that was when he began making hand puppets which he believes better suited for TV than Marionettes. About this time the dog Poindexter came into being, and after a year of aimless existence he suddenly developed a personality of his own and for five years has been popular in Nashville. Now Poindexter and Tom Tichenor make their educational television debut. Tales of Poindexter consists of 52 fifteen-minute episodes originally recorded on kinescope. 39 episodes were broadcast during the series' first run, and then all 52 were broadcast during second run (broadcasting 2 per week).
