- Boris Goldovsky discusses the overall plan of the series and then is joined by Dorothy Gardner and Jan Meyerowitz who discusses with him how they came to collaborate on the opera. This episode acquaints the audience with the forces behind the selection of a new opera for public performances and describes the inter-relation between the words and the music as envisioned by the composer, the author and the producer. Once certain revisions and rearrangements are discussed, it is made clear that the audience will then follow the step by step production of The Meeting until the presentation of the finished performance. - Series Description
- The purpose of Opera for Tomorrow is to depict, through means of actual illustration and demonstration, the creative processes in the production of an opera. Each of the 10 half-hour episodes describes a particular phase of this process; the final episode represents the finished product of the producer, the singers, the set designers, the orchestra, and the many other people who co-operated in this creative venture. The series was produced and directed by John W. Ziegler at WQED, Pittsburgh. The opera, around which this whole series is based and which is performed in the last episode, is The Meeting. Actually, the work is the second in a five-act opera entitled Eastward in Eden written by Dorothy Gardner with music by Jan Mayerowitz that tells the story of the poet Emily Dickinson. The particular act presented in Opera for Tomorrow concerns the meeting of Emily and Dr. Charles Wadsworth, a minister in Philadelphia. Miss Gardner is a recognized authority on Emily Dickinson and her opera is based on factual material about the poet which has recently come to light. The host for the series is Boris Goldovsky, who was previously the host on NETs Opera For Today. Mr. Goldovsky is also known throughout the nation as the genial master of ceremonies of Opera News on the Air, the intermission feature of the Metropolitan Operas Saturday afternoon broadcasts. Also participating in Opera for Tomorrow are students of the Chatham College Opera Workshop, which is under Mr. Goldovskys direction, and members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
