Episode Description
The Congress of Strings, an unusual string orchestra, is composed of one hundred talented music students from Canada and the United States. Chosen by competitive auditions, they attend an eight-week intensive summer session on the campus of Michigan State University, in East Lansing, under the sponsorship of the American Federation of Musicians. During the 1962 season, the orchestra was under the direction of Erich Leinsdorf, musical director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra; Robert Shaw, associate conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra and founder and director of the Robert Shaw Chorale; and Josef Krips, well-known Viennese conductor who is now musical director of the Buffalo Philharmonic and next year moves to the same post with the San Francisco Philharmonic. In addition, the summer faculty included many excellent musical artists of the United States. The two episodes that make up with series, each run approximately 90 minutes and were recorded on videotape. The program presents Mr. Krips conducting the Congress of Strings in the Overture to The Messiah by Handel, Trigon by Michigan State University composer James Niblock; and Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart. The program includes interviews with Mr. Krips and Mr. Niblock, Gean Greenwell, Chairman of voice in the Department of Music at Michigan State University, is host. Members of the Congress of Strings summer faculty are: Chairman Paul Oberg, chairman of the music department at the University of Minnesota Rafael Druian, concertmaster, the Cleveland Orchestra Hyman Goodman, concertmaster, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra Frank Houser, concertmaster, the San Francisco Symphony of Orchestra Louis Krasner, distinguished concert violinist and professor of violin at Syracuse University Mishel Piastro, former concertmaster, the New York Philharmonic William Lincer, principal violist, the New York Philharmonic Robert Jamieson, principal cellist, the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra Theo Salzman, principal cellist the Pittsburgh symphony Orchestra Warren Benfield, principal string bass player, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Congress of Strings: produced by WMSB, East Lansing.
