Description
Episode Description
Eugene Ormandy, conductor and music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, leads the 1962 Congress of strings orchestra in a concert recorded at Michigan State University. The orchestra is composed of 102 young people from 36 states, the District of Columbia and two Canadian provinces. In addition, there is an intermission feature with two congress of Strings faculty members: Rafael Druian, concertmaster for the Cleveland Orchestra and artist in residence at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and William Lincer, solo viola, New York Philharmonic. The musical program consists of Bachs Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major; Adagio for Strings, Opus 11, by Barber: Adagio and Fugue in G Minor, K. 546, by Mozart; Corellis Sarabanda, Giga E Badinerie; and Tchaikovskys Serenade for Strings, Opus. Congress of Strings 1963 is a production of WMSB at Michigan State University, East Lansing. The Congress of Strings, which is sponsored by the American Federation of Musicians, is designed to discover and encourage the vest best young string musicians to fill existing deficiencies in symphony and chamber music groups. Initiated in 1959 by the AFM, the first String Congress was at Greenleaf Lake in Oklahoma. The following year it was held at the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico in San German. In 1961 the event was moved to the campus of Michigan State University, East Lansing. The student body of the congress is made up of young men and women between the ages of 15 and 23 who are successful contestants in community auditions conducted by AFM locals throughout the United States and Canada. The winners receive full scholarships for the Congress, free transportation to and from Michigan State as well as their meals, housing, and music lessons. During the eight-week summer session the students have the added opportunity of performing a series of public concerts under the direction of prominent conductors. The only requirement made of the young musicians is serious effort in daily practice, studying regular symphony repertoire and chamber music. Dean of the Congress is Dr. Paul M. Oberg, professor and chairman of music and music education at the University of Minnesota. Faculty members, in addition to Rafael Druian and William Lincer, include Mishel Piastro, former conductor of the Longines Symphonette and former concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic under Toscanini; Frank Houser, concertmaster of the San Francisco Symphony Hyman Goodman, concertmaster of the Toronto Symphony; Louis Krasner, professor of violin and chamber music at Syracuse University and former concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra; Theo Salzman, principal cellist of the Pittsburgh Symphony; Robert Jamieson, principal cellist of the Minneapolis Symphony; and Warren Benfield, principal string bass with the Chicago Symphony.
