Episode Description
John Burton, one of the worlds acknowledged artists in glasswork, was born in England in the 1890s. He has been a metallurgical chemist, a radio commentator for the British Office of War Information, and a lecturer in 24 countries throughout the world. His glass is exhibited in several museums including the highly honored collections at Corning, New York, and at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He has received one of only two Guggenheim fellowships ever awarded for artistic creation in glass. John Burton is also a philosopher with a unique talent for self-expression through conversation. Every conversation with of monologue by him reflects the accumulated wisdom of a rich and varied life. This program explores John Burtons unique talents as both a glassblower and a philosopher. He is visited in his Oasis studio near Santa Barbara where he demonstrates his art in glassblowing. As he works her explains the philosophy of his handwork and discusses his philosophy of life. His discourage ranges from his thoughts on automation, - a result of the lack of creativity in the world to the principal business of living which to Burton is to be happy in life. Burton introduces viewers to other facets of his life as cameras follow him on tour of his home and its grounds. He shows some of his oil paintings, trophies, and treasures, and his wine-container like vault which houses many pieces of his glass work. On the grounds surrounding his home-workshop, Burton, who believes that man has gone too far from nature, proudly displays orchids, and ginger and tuberous begonias that he has grown. In the closing sequences of the program, Burton is seen strolling along with his wife, and returns to his workshop to tutor two young pupils in the art of glasswork. Series Description
This series focuses on the private vision of the creative person. Each program is devoted to a 20th century artist whose special qualities of imagination, taste, originality, intelligence, craftsmanship, and individuality have marked him as a pace-setter in his field. These artists --- whose fields span the entire gamut of the art world --- include filmmaker Jean Renoir, poet John Ciardi, industrial designer Raymond Loewy, Hollywood producer-director King Vidor, noted Broadway couple Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, artist Leonard Baskin, humorist James Thurber, satirist Robert Osborn, Indian musician Ravi Shankar, poet P. G. Wodehouse, painter Georges Braque, former ballet star Olga Spessivtzeva, Rudolf Bing, and Marni Nixon. The format for each program has been geared to the individual featured; Performance, interview, and documentary technique are employed interchangeably.
