Description
Program Description
Robert Mirabal with Rare Tribal Mob
Program Description
Born and raised in Taos Pueblo, Robert Mirabal began playing the flute at the age of 18, influenced by the traditional music of Taos. Studying music from West Africa and Haiti, Japanese Taiko drumming, Celtic music, and rock and hip-hop, Mirabal began to create his own blend of traditional and popular music. In 1995 he released his first major album,?Land, which was largely based around traditional drumming and chanting. His next CDs,?Song Carrier?and?Warrior Magician, featured, in the words of the New York Times, "exquisitely nuanced flute playing" in birdlike melodies, accompanied by exotic instruments like the didjeridoo, as well as keyboards and guitar. 1997's?Mirabal?and 1999's?Taos Tales?cemented his reputation as one of Native America's most promising young musicians, and the 2001 PBS special and CD?Music From A Painted Cave brought him national acclaim.
