Speech by Presidential Candidate Bob Dole in Dixville Notch (New Hampshire)

Good morning. Good morning everyone. Well this is quite a day. My name is Steve Barber. I'm one of the managing partners of the balsams and we're delighted to have all of you folks here in the Jandek social room. I never miss an opportunity to pass on a word of history but this is the room that first was built here for the balsams back in 1918 66. This was the main lobby of the hotel. The front desk stood right there. There was a billiard parlor in the next room over in the main dining room was right down here and we had 25 guestrooms upstairs so it's very fitting that we that we stand here in front of the original front door of the hotel in 1995 to meet one of the most respected candidates of the campaign to be our president. In 1996 Senator Bob Dole will be introduced to you by our very good friend of ours a longtime guest first of all I'd rate some highest but

but he's a he has been a good friend he's been a governor's counselor in New Hampshire. He has been a congressman from New Hampshire. He was the governor of New Hampshire and now he is our senator Judd Gregg. Thank you Steve and Warren and all the family here at the balsams which is the most spectacular place on earth isn't it. You look at just the magnificent location and it's a pleasure to come here under any circumstances. Our family has enjoyed coming here innumerable times just to relax and take advantage of the beautiful amenities and the wonderful food and the great skiing are just going out in the lake and paddling around. But it's also a great pleasure to be here today to have a chance to participate in what is one of the key events in American political politics which of course is the New Hampshire primary for the presidency of the United States. Our state has been right

every time except for one. And obviously we were right that time too because that one hasn't turned out all that well. So from my standpoint it's especially a privilege to be participating in this campaign. The gentleman who I've gotten to know rather well in the Senate who I knew before that who is really in my opinion expresses the personality and character that we need in this country. Last night I had a chance to speak at an event and I gave him a long esoteric introduction. I won't do that again to him. Let me simply say this that what our nation needs is we go into the next century. He's someone who understands the character of our nation and who's listening to lead us in the tradition and which is been America which has been in New Hampshire and that's the tradition of downsizing our government of allowing individuals their freedoms and their rights recognizing that the dynamics of our nation is built on the individual and the entrepreneur and the family. And then while we're passing on to our children as a

country unfortunately which is today headed on the roads to bankruptcy and that we're not going to correct that unless we get our federal government under control and start to downsize it and bring its voracious nature of growth under some sort of restraint. And this gentleman is doing yeoman's labor and giving us tremendous leadership in what is a revolution to recreate our federal structure. And as president I know that he will continue to do that and continue to give us the type of leadership which will assure that we pass onto our children a nation which has the chances for prosperity and opportunity that we all desire for them. So it's a great pleasure for me to introduce today Elizabeth Dole and Bob Dole Senator Bob Dole from Kansas. All.

Right. Well thank you very much. I did want to introduce Elizabeth and as you know she's president Red Cross and she got to be president something much more than I can say and she does an outstanding job and right now she's been traveling around the country trying to raise millions of dollars to make the blood supply even safer. And yet I think she's done a great job at the Red Cross. Hopefully she'll be leaving or taking a leave of absence from the Red Cross one of these days as she can help me because the Congress is going to be in session I think until Christmas Eve and then the election process really starts in Fewell starts in earnest in February. And so hopefully Elizabeth can carry me through the winter here. But I appreciate very much her coming. I've said so many times that when she stands up and looks out at a crowd this size the first thing that crossed her mind is Boy what a place for a blood drive. At. It but it gets a little messy.

She's trying to find your vein and I'm trying to find your wallet. So. But. In any event I'm certainly happy that she's here and happy that Judd was able to come along this morning. He knows the area very well and Steve very happy. Thank you very much for your generous welcome and we've had an opt in to go into the ballot room and as many of you know probably everybody knows at midnight they will gather next February and they will cast their ballots very quickly they said nobody is ever late. And then the news will go out all across America but particularly all across New Hampshire on who received 24 total votes how many Bob Dole may have received and the other Republican candidates and I guess there are four Democrats in the 24 right and some independents so it's a mixed mixture of people primarily Republican. And it means when you wake up the next morning the other voters in this state will they'll have a little indication of the trend. I remember in 1988 George Bush got 11 votes and I got six. That turned out to be a trend.

I didn't think it was accurate at the time but it was so I saw it early that morning all the way to the polling place I kept hearing Bush won in Dixville Notch and I kept saying well what Dixville Notch Yeah. Well I've been up here three times. I don't know what happened. But in any event maybe I came too often. But I'll just take a minute and then. In our part of the country you may not be any Kansans in the room but whenever we have a meeting we always have time for questions. There may be questions here because the American people we like a participatory sort of democracy. And they may have questions you may have questions on your mind that didn't occur to us and I'm not going to make a long speech here on vacation and I am too come to think I don't know when it starts. I've been up here a week and they keep telling me it's going to start tomorrow but actually leave on Friday. So. But it is a lot of fun. We've had six good days and we've been up here many times. I've been coming to New Hampshire for a long long time. Judd Gregg touched on it. You know elections some people don't

think they're very important at all. There may be some in this room who haven't voted recently because you're sort of fed up with all of us. There is a this strain of cynicism always has been in American politics. American people when they look at politicians or politics like when they look at anything else they they maybe they like something even better than they. They see if it's an automobile or refrigerator or somebody to be president United States or be in the Senate or be the local sheriff whatever it may be. But by and large the system works and it works particularly well in the early primary states. And I told people in New Hampshire and I know a lot of people are not from New Hampshire that New Hampshire and Iowa have a particular responsibility because I will be the first caucus states. That's for people who come from all over Iowa. They'll gather together and it won't be a open primary primer but they'll gather together in each little school district whatever and they'll be so many people for this candidate and some of that's a caucus.

And that's that's that's a real commitment because they're going to be snowing out in Iowa in February. It's going to be very cold. I mean you're going to get out of the living room or it's nice and warm you're going to get in your car and drive somewhere in the snow and spend about two hours for your candidate. So that's a real commitment. That's the first caucus state. And then if history is holds true 10 days later will be New Hampshire the first primaries where you walk in and you just vote in the election booth. And those two states and some would say well that's too much importance because they're small states. They're not really microcosm of America. They're not big urban areas in either state but those two states have a big big impact on what happens after that. Now many states have understood this. They've moved their primaries forward. New York for example and I'm certain are New Yorkers here will have a primary about 10 days after the New Hampshire primary. So the whole process is speeded up I guess the point I would make is this Pennsylvania's going to move theirs up. Delaware has moved their hands up. Colorado has moved theirs up.

Georgia Arizona I mean all those states are deciding we've got to move up we're going to be part of the process. I think anybody here from New Jersey. Right. You don't have a primary till June and it's going to be over. So the people in New Hampshire and Iowa and the other early states have to make a judgment for you. So if you'd like to leave your proxy with anybody from New Hampshire and that's the way it works. A lot of people will never have an opportunity to vote in the primary will be over unless something unforeseen happens. I think it could be over by the end of March in Nebraska which is a great state for Bob Dole. They don't have their primary until May and we don't have ours in Kansas until late April. So in any event that's sort of a thumbnail sketch of where the process how it begins and how it starts and how quickly it moves. As I learned in 88 when I won and I when I became president of Iowa then I had to go in New Hampshire where Bush became president United States. And because he beat me here even though my pollster I remember very well

one morning after winning Iowa he had a big bump in the polls. We were 20 points ahead in New Hampshire with six days to go. And my pollster came in the motel one morning whistling Hail To The Chief and I was the only one there. And he said you're going to be the next president I just got some new numbers you're 20 points ahead. Well I lost by eight points. I haven't seen the guy since. I don't think I've paid him either going to think of it. But. But the point I want to make is this in addition to the process it is very important. You know I've I've been I went to Congress and Eisenhower was leaving the White House and I have had a great privilege in my lifetime to serve with a lot of great presidents Democrats and Republicans. And I have great admiration for the office for the institution for the presidency and what it means to us and what it means to the free world.

And we don't think about it much but being the United States is a pretty intimidating job but it's a very important one. I know a lot of people get blamed and nothing ever goes right. And the president blames the Congress and Congress blames the president. And that's been going on they tell me for a couple hundred years too. But my point is is it seems to me that we're on the threshold of big big change in America and whether you're a Democrat or Republican My parents were Democrats. But whether you're a Democrat or Republican big changes occurred in 1994. Whether you agree or not the people who voted decided maybe it's time after 40 years of one party rule and Congress would give the other party a chance. And that's what happened. Republicans have not control the Congress the United States since my hero Dwight Eisenhower was president 40 years. We control the Senate for eight of those those 40 years they had at 32 but to house zero 40 years

the house was in the hands of the other. That's not a lot of competition. So finally we have some competition. And Newt Gingrich has become the speaker of the house. Never had a speaker named Newt before. But the point is we never had a president named Bob before either. So I think maybe maybe you're on to something here. You know Newt Bob pretty common name you think sooner or later somebody get elected. But so it's all about change. And a judge knows Judd Gregg has been right in the middle of it. He's one of the rising stars in our party and does a lot of work in the Senate we're dealing with issues like Medicare. And I see maybe one or two in the audience he might have an interest in it. Medicare is a very important program. Medicare is going to go broke unless we fix it. And Bob Dole didn't say this and Judd Gregg didn't say this it was said by the trustees of the Medicare trust fund three of whom are member of President Clinton's cabinet

and they said about six years from now which means you couldn't pay the hospital bills and a party you couldn't pay the doctor bills under Part B. So we want to fix that just as in 1983 when Social Security was about to go belly up. Ronald Reagan a Republican president and Tip O'Neill the Democratic speaker and Howard Baker who was then leader in the Senate appointed a commission Claude Pepper was on that commission. I was on that commission. There was 15 of us on that came and we fix Social Security. So security is in good shape at least until the year 2013 probably till the year 2020 and maybe beyond. So we'd like to do the same with Medicare. We'd like to preserve it. We'd like to strengthen it. We like to protect it and we believe we can do it without devastating anybody and without by giving people choices choices. We don't believe that the best medical care the care that cost the

most and all we're trying to do is reduce slow the rate of growth of Medicare from about ten point one percent a year to six point six percent. The president saying let's slow it to seven or 7.1. We're not very far apart. We believe we can do it. I just raise that is one issue but on a broader scale it's all about returning power to the states and power to the people the people people in this room whether it's reducing taxes we take your money. We have the power we give you back the money. You decide outspend we don't decide how to spend. We believe we can make the Government little smaller and the government does good things. Don't misunderstand me we can make it a little smaller a little less intrusive a little more democratic a little more user friendly. We can eliminate probably three or 40 departments have a never be missed particularly by the taxpayers. And that money would go back into education at local levels. And there are a lot of good things we can do.

I didn't have I don't have it with me this morning but I carry around a copy of the 10th amendment the constitution is part of the Bill of Rights is twenty eight words in length and what does it say and said unless the powers reserved to the people that the federal government it should go to the states and the people but for 40 years a shift has been in the other direction whether it's more regulation or more taxes or more of this if any be filled out the easy form the easy tax. Fill it out you know just on your way to work. It's 31 pages of instructions on a one page tax form. We believe it ought to be fair and flatter and simpler. We believe we ought to reduce the capital gains rates of people in this room and rooms all across America can reduce the cost of capital. Do not make more investments create more jobs and more opportunities mark in the private sector. We believe in fact we're not going to we're going to reduce the capital gains rate this year. There may be some of this rumor in a family held business and the

estate talks. Tax laws punish family held businesses let's say that the husband dies. Well the first death is not so bad. But then the second death. Maybe you've got children in the business. So we're going to change that so we're going to change is be about a three million dollar exemption in a family held business or farm or ranch or whatever it might be because we want to protect middle class Americans who've made investments and worked all their lives and built up a business. We don't want to sell half of it as Ronald Reagan used to say to pay your state taxes. In fact he want to get rid of all estate taxes. His view was via scrimp and save and the family works in a business she found to have a little something you shouldn't have to give it to government just because somebody died. So we're trying to make some of these changes in our view make a lot of sense. They're not radical in the sense we're giving power back to you money back to you let you keep your property. The average regulations cost each family in

America $6000 per year. And a lot of regulations are good right now and very environmentally sensitive area in New Hampshire. And we understand that. So we're not trying to devastate the environment. But we are trying to bring a little common sense into some of these regulations just grow and grow and grow and grow. We're one vote short in the Senate. Our founding fathers when they wrote the Constitution they talked about the legislative bodies said the Senate ought to be a little different because they have longer terms it ought to be as George Washington said. Were you sort of pour the coffee into the saucer and it cools a little bit. The House can do things in 30 minutes. We can't do anything in 30 minutes. They spent two days on the balanced budget amendment. We spent 22 days on the balanced budget amendment. So we've kept our word with the founding fathers we are a more deliberate body they'd be proud of us I guess.

I mean it takes forever to get things done time. And I remember in the Senate debate on the constitutional amendment for a balanced budget which we lost by one vote one vote 66 we needed 67 votes. We still may get that vote if you watch C-SPAN you remember watching Senator Byrd who's a very he is the student of the rules of the Senate he's also a student of Roman history and sometimes he'll talk at length about Roman history and he talk about how bad the balance budget was and he talked a lot about Roman history and one day he was up there waxing weight he said of Cicero were alive today he would be opposed to the balanced budget amendment. At which point Senator Thurmond wrote and said I knew Cicero. And he was for the balanced budget amendment. Now you don't know Senator Thurmond He's 92 years old not as old as Mr. Tillotson who around or some or 96 goes to work every day. Mr. Senator Thurmond is 92. He's running again for re-election. He introduced me last week in South Carolina said I will not be on the ticket with Senator Dole.

He's too young. Made me feel good. Anyway Senator Thurmond thinking about term limits if he's reelected is that you know maybe be for term limits but. But I wouldn't want to bet the farm on it anyway because he's planning on running for a couple of more terms. But the point is as we're trying to make changes with a balanced budget and with regulatory reform with Medicare reform with balancing the budget by the year 2002. For you yes for your kids yes for your grandkids. Yes. And a generation out there that's coming on yes. This the best opportunity we've had in my memory. We've got one problem. We've got a president who's going to veto all this or most of it. And that's why 1996 and why a lot of us are out running for president. We believe we have a Republican Congress. We believe we have a mandate for change and we believe we need somebody in the White House to say it. I agree. Maybe not on everything but on a lot of things that we

think should be done. And so that's why I'm a candidate for the office of prezzie United States. I would just say in conclusion. You never know what people in any audience are looking for in anything in a candidate. But I think if you're looking for experiences you must be somebody who's been there somebody who's made a lot of tough decisions somebody who knows as Judd says about the character of America somebody who's made little sacrifice for this the greatest country on the face of the earth and somebody who I think I'm not going to be modest here that really understands that there are a lot of people in America with real problems. There are probably some in this room but there are a lot of them out there was real problems whether it's health care whether it's finding a job or whether it's something else and Republicans are just as caring and just as sensitive as the people in the other party except we have a different way and a different way of achieving it. We don't believe the government has the answer to everything.

We believe it lies in the private sector primarily and that's why we put the emphasis on the private sector on making a profit. That's America. Steve started as a caddie 25 years now right. Thirty six years. He's a co-owner. That's what happens in America. I met with a man yesterday who started his business in a garage. You know I was a big owner of Cabletron Craig Benson in New Hampshire and fortunate in the Fortune 300 12 years ago he and his partner out there in a garage put together cables. So in America it will happen if we give people the opportunity and I think our best years are yet ahead. We're going into a new century and we want to be ready. And finally on foreign policy. Nobody ever thinks about it unless there's a problem. Foreign policy is very important where we stand in the world is very important. And I'm willing to say our prestige has gone down in the last 30 months. President Clinton said himself

domestic policy don't worry about foreign policy. We are the leader of the free world whether we like it or not and we pay a price for leadership and we pay a price for a lack of leadership. And look what's happened in Bosnia in the last two and a half years they finally took a little action. But we've lost a lot of prestige because we stood on the sidelines. And I'm not suggesting sending American troops but I am suggesting we have an independent nation like Bosnia a member of the United Nations a little country our little cunt member 50 years ago the little country to Israel a little country. And see what happened to the Jews 50 years ago around the world and see the ethnic cleansing and the genocide today in Bosnia because the West stood by and wouldn't even lift the arms embargo so these people could defend themselves. You have that right under Article 51 of the UN Charter right of self-defense when Candidate Clinton was running against George Bush he was criticizing Bush saying we ought to lift the arms embargo. And

I agreed with him and I disagree with President Bush when he became president and suddenly went off the radar screen. So I don't know what will happen but I just tell you foreign policy is important. Five hundred million people in Eastern Europe in the former Soviet Union have a little taste of freedom because of us because of Ronald Reagan and George Bush and yes President Carter because we stood firm we didn't cut our defenses and the communism collapsed the Berlin wall collapsed. And now these five hundred million people have a little taste of what we take for granted. They can travel. They can come to America. Never could do that before they can pick up the telephone without somebody they go to church. They can send their kids to school. They can visit their neighbors that somebody's following them around. And a lot of these leaders have come to America and I'll stop and they come to see us and we all have pretty much the same message when they leave. They say it with tears in her eyes or tears streaming down her cheeks. And they're young and they're old and they're men and they're women

and some have been in jail for standing up like I am speaking in public and maybe criticizing the government. And what did they say when they leave they say pretty much the same thing. They say we want to be like America we want to be like America which says a lot for America. So there are millions and millions of people they didn't come for foreign aid they know we don't have the money but they want to be like us. They want technical assistance. They want to travel in America. They want to see what happens in America. They want to see the private sector. They don't see places like this in the former Soviet Union. So we've got a great marriage and you've got a great responsibility as we go into the next century. And I'll just say to this group wherever you are from I believe I'm ready. I believe I'm equipped. I believe I have the experience and the dedication and a commitment to make America a better place. Thank you very much. I'll be happy to

take questions. Anybody has a. Or. Discretion. That's what we're trying to do. And some of my friends would like to put strings on it other would say get the governors decide. I remember Governor Thompson of Wisconsin telling your group ascenders about two weeks ago I said listen I'm elected by the same people you are. Don't you think I care about people think I'm going let people go without medical care or go without food. In Wisconsin. No. So my view is we're going to get power back to the states let's give power back to states. Not a lot of federal strings on it. But the answer is

going to be on and work work. That's where it's going to be. I think right now we have about 50 Republican votes. And again in the Senate I've got to pick off some Democrats and keep all the Republicans if we have a filibuster. I've got to get 60. So I appreciate Phil Graham was mentioning and welfare reform and I hope he'll vote for the bill. I believe he will. He always votes for my bills. He shows very good judgment. And the else. Yes. That judge up here is saying you're right. You I'll get him up.

We will make a point with President Dole making sure they're not taking rocks other of the interest bill. And. You've got a good point. It's happening or might happen here and not necessarily the right way. And we know I must say whenever I was in Miami or several months ago I picked up the Miami Herald and there was a big exposé on taxicabs who were transporting elderly people to Medicaid and Medicare facilities. And this reporter figured out this taxi driver who collect the hundreds of thousands of dollars would had been driving 127 mile an hour and never picked up anybody. And to drive 24 hours a day for six months to put the bill in that needed for Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement. So maybe you get a big federal program. It's going to happen. But we have to ride herd on it. We can save a lot of money. Medicare for example if we can stop a lot of the things that are happening there. Senator Bill calling from Maine are people from Maine here I met people from Maine. We've got part of our

program and well it used to be welfare reform or Medicare reform is to stop fraud waste and abuse. Billions of dollars a year. And he's got all these examples get a lot of hearings in the aging Committee where some people are fit with a prosthetic limb for the wrong leg for example and charge 17 18 $2000 for it. And the list goes on and on. I know this is not what normally happens but it's out there whether it's digging or picking up rocks in the middle of the interstate or something else. And let me just say one thing because I don't a lot of people say all of these congressmen are all alike they could talk about waste. What are they done for themselves. The first thing we did in this year's budget battle is reduce the budget for Congress by 200 million dollars. And a strange thing happened everybody showed up for work the next day and they were on time. Funny thing about when you start tightening up people to get to a boy this job is serious. So we're going to try to be the example and not the problem.

Yes ma'am. The questions on campaign reform you know and President Clinton and Newt Gingrich are up here or there in Claremont Claremont New Hampshire about two months ago they shook hands on an idea that we would have a campaign reform commission. The president would appoint so many and I would appoint so many and Newt would appoint so many and they would sit down together and let this outside group because you're never going to get it done if you leave it up to us. Let me be very honest with you. I'm a Republican. When the Democrats were in charge all they had campaign reform and help the Democrats. Well we have campaign reform and it helps Republicans. That's not what you want. You want across the board campaign reform. Well it was two years ago that I suggested in a speech on the Senate floor we have a commission gets an outside people with no axe to grind not into politics who understand how the system works

and then make us vote up or down no amendments. Just like base closing the vote up or down on campaign reform. You either eliminate PACs or you limit what PACs can give. And a lot of other soft money you know organized labor pumps millions and millions and millions and millions and millions of dollars in the Democratic campaigns. Ninety six percent of labor money goes into Democratic campaigns. And that's part of the problem too. It's called soft money soft money big corporation. Lot of money comes into the national parties. Just recently there was you know the president said if you want to dinner with the president and the vice pres $100000 Well I got a better deal than that you're going to have dinner with me any time for you know a thousand dollars whatever whatever is right. But. I get the point. We have to change it. We've already we've done lobbying reform in the Senate which is another thing that bothered a lot of people. We've done the so-called gift ban in the Senate and the one thing we haven't done in the Senate is campaign reform.

Yes sir. All right. Well let me say first about the space program and I think you're exactly right. I haven't seen Apollo 13. I want to see it. I just saw the fugitive the other night. We've got a lot of videos but we're not there to watch it. And but Apollo 13 is coming up. You know what I think we ought to do. Maybe it sounds a little old fashioned maybe. I'm in a little passion but I think what we ought to do for young people and you ought to be out there helping us. We ought to be standing up and talking about

family values. I'm not getting in any philosophical. I'm talking about the value of children the value of family. You know I went out to Hollywood I made a speech on Hollywood 93 on the Senate floor. Nobody cared. I made another one 94. Nobody care. But I went to Hollywood and made a speech about the entertainment industry and a lot of people cared. And time magazine care they're getting rid of some of the people they may sell Interscope and the today they may buy CNN or whatever but shame is a powerful weapon. And I know they say oh we have our first amendment rights I'm not talking about censorship of television of these little disks. You can buy this filthy awful language on it your child child can buy anywhere or television but television violence all things that happen on television. I'm talking about leadership a bully pulpit integrity character standing up and asking the American people because the American people know what they see on television particularly if you're a parent. Now that may not be exciting it's not technology but you look at the number of illegitimate birth

in America and all the drug problems in America and all the homelessness in America and all the kids who never have an opportunity in America because nobody cares about them. I think we ought to start looking back how to revitalize the family and talk about values honesty decency integrity hard work. Like a lot of people here got where you are not just can't the government can't do it. We've tried so many programs. We spent millions and millions almost trillions of dollars on welfare reform for the last 40 years. And what's happened has gotten worse. That's why we want to change it. We're not trying to hurt people who have to have help. We want to get them back on the payroll. Restore their dignity. And if we could do a lot of that the next four to eight years or 10 years or 15 or 20 years or people that a lot of pride in what they did and pride in the fact they were moving out of welfare into something else or they'd stop drugs or stop smoking. And I agree with President Clinton teenage smoking is terrible it

kills young people. But I'm a little confused when his previous surgeon generals said we ought to legalize marijuana. So I don't I get a mixed message there but Viber if I have the option I'm going to stress what I just suggested and then maybe some other things come along in the technology but we don't want to give up on the space program. I know it costs money but once we lose the edge of technology in this country we're out we're out of it. So we want to keep the edge. Yes. And just to repeat and I know people have to leave. But the question is on tort

reform and we didn't get as far in the Senate as they did in the house of units and we have a very narrow bill that passed the House to get it passed the Senate again. We couldn't get the votes. And I know there's a big conflict there between business on the one side and trial lawyers on the other side and others who just think it's wrong. You know I come out on the side of we've got to somehow limit some of these damaged cases we didn't get that done in our bill. We are going to go to conference. But but I think he do probably make a point to try to weigh that. I look at your trial lawyer. Yeah. Well you make you know they're entitled. I'm a lawyer. I'm a lawyer. My wife's a lawyer with only two lawyers in Washington who trust each other but that pharmacist. That

we do a lot of that out in the Midwest. Years ago I go on bootlegging. The question questions about drugs get eaten. Not totally but if you say legalize something where it is accessible at a reasonable cost that are free would that decrease demand. I don't happen to think so. And I think what's happened in the so-called war on drugs in the White House has given up on the war on drugs they cut the drug czar's budget drug use is up again in America. What it should be go out. To to check to

check. Did. She. Satisfy your urine. Yes he answered my questions very well. So. Now. This. Campaign finance part. He

Yes. And why why what does the guy have that the others don't have that you like to bet I don't. I didn't realize he

what. People are. Saying is interesting. Maybe it doesn't hurt. I think so. I just wanted to ask you what's important when you try to decide both talked about stocks to be and I just want to get a sense of what's going to make up your mind for you and when you do decide. Are we talking about families here. Is that right. Well whatever is important to us like family structure you know to bring up moral values for your character is what. What would you say it's the most important thing in a candidate today has got to be there. There's a sense of family a sense of moral morals. We're seeing so much we're just seeing so much of these candidates to get out there. They talk

political issues they fight with each other. And then they get in there and they do whatever they want to do anyways. And I think if you find if you can find a candidate with a good sense of morals he's going to do what he says he's going to do or she's going to do it. She's going to say she's going to do and that's going to make a big difference in who I vote for. I think it's very important. I think. Well I think that's right about that. If they have a good sense of moral values that will carry over into what they do because just what you had said also is that when they get into office there's so many things that are pulling them this way and that way that if they don't have that you know deep feeling about how they want things to be they will be swayed in different directions this year so far. John you might have those that. Anybody trust him that way right now.

Right now it's I wouldn't say right now I mean again what they say and what they do is totally different you know it's it's awfully early. We haven't seen enough candidates and I think the true sense of someone's moral character will come out when you get a small group of people that are that are competing. Desperately against each other for that one spot and they start pulling the dirty tricks out of their handbags and the ones that don't pull it out the ones that stand their ground stand up for what they believe in that that means a lot. And those are the ones that are going to attract my attention more than the guy that's on TV saying like my opponent did this my opponent did that. You know I'm not worry about what your opponents are and what are you doing that's what's important to you. Those are dirty tricks they always come out. It's terrible. They're always in there. I mean I actually when asked all I said well you know what do you feel or what are they going to pull out about you. I mean what is there of course he really has been there for so long and. If there's a dirty word probably have been pulled out it would have already been pulled out. So he's probably almost maybe untouchable. I don't know. This it sounds like something is going to do what they say say with a great history with how that's we're actually being straight with the

public. You know. And yeah if I'm if I say I'm going to do it but I just feel there's too many of them who can't do that because they get into politics. They get there they get into office and somebody said hey wait I did this for you remember or remember way back when and I know you helped or I helped you. Aren't you going to help me here. And it takes a strong person to say. Yeah I did help you. But are you going to help me. But you know there are no strings there. You know I'm going to do what I want to do. When I ran on this and I was voted into office because of this. But what happens in Washington is you know it's the good old boys feel like as much as they might like Goodfellas when they're out campaigning you know once they get back in and forget about the voters. I mean does it make you feel like is there hope for any of these fellows that are you know courting you right now.

I have a feeling that the American public has made up its mind that it's not going to put up with this this type of behavior much longer and I think some of the politicians are starting to catch on to seeing some major changes. People have been in office for years and the public just said hey we want you to boom you're out the door and something is turning some heads. I don't know if it's turning heads fast enough. I don't know if the politicians are truly getting in touch with what the Americans want. But it's the only thing that we have as a weapon against them. We need to use use it wisely. You know I'm not this I'm not sure this is following the question but something that somebody just said here made me think it was Margaret Chase who was from Maine who was Margaret Chase from Maine and I just came across an article about her. It was in Yankee magazine you know talking about how she ran and she and she was in the office for so long and they asked finally I don't know how old she was when she got out of it but they said well why did you stop and she said money. She said I didn't have the money that these people have to continue calling and even though she did a wonderful job. You know there was just no money. So I get worried. A lot of

times they just money no money talks. No. And you know I'm afraid that some people just use that money. I can think of a few people but I won't mention them on it. You know and they're always in office because they have the money they have the money to throw around for campaigns and I wish they would just subtract it and just say you have to do it on your own or I guess maybe what Dole was saying too. You know the Democrats are getting all of that money pumped into them from by labor. Whichever way the campaign reform I'm going you know one party wants it right. So right. Right. So what because they know they need that money. The American public almost expects a flashy campaign with lots of news blurbs in them and their posters and the buttons. And they have to pay for it one way or the other. So it's a double edged sword here we are expecting them to come to us and give us these buttons and make wonderful speeches on our TV networks. And yet we don't want to allow them to get the money to do it. I certainly think that's wrong and I think there's a lot of a lot of money out there that shouldn't be there but we need to look at why

it's there. Why is it doing this a perfect example is there because they need it and what it's about to make it what do you think of him. You know in terms of what your concerns are I think it's going to keep his promise that is been saying that he stand up to what people are worried about. They sound wonderful. I think that you know they all sound wonderful. They know they're going to. You know. You know what did he really say. Did he say what he was going to do he really said what his party was doing. You know and what groups of them are standing for but what they actually see going to do and it's not time for him to say that he's trying to appease everybody. And he may think that he's getting down to details. But you know is he really you know he's you know he's giving a speech he's giving out details he's giving out stories he's you know bringing out the jokes and you know smoothing it over making us feel good and laughing with him and he's very personable. I mean I enjoy listening to him you know and he's certainly I mean he goes. He mentions Eisenhower when he got in there I mean I don't really know. Eisenhower I was little I was little you

know you weren't here. And so he especially speaking to this crowd this crowd remembers Eisenhower. And he just played the crowd. But it's really going well. He comes from good. You know he he's he's done a lot. He's he's he himself has done a lot. I mean he comes from Graff. You think about him and you know small farm town and what he you know he you know he's the people he's the grass roots and he's been there and he remembers his past which is important. And you know he would like to actually I think he brings some of that with him when he's at work which is great you know. You know money is great but he was a big part of this crowd was you made it. You probably you know all started someplace and got yourselves here and you've worked hard to get yourselves here to be able to. You know vacation at a place like this. I mean granted there are some people who didn't have to do that. I mean he pulled up Steve.

Steve Farber who is doing it so she might as well make make people love it how do you trust that that is going to be as good as it gets in there. That's something I guess you know all will fall out. You know as we progress towards primaries and you know somebody calls it it's politics it's what it's all about. Unfortunately the worst of the worst aspect of politics is that we have to judge both of our candidates by the way they look on television or the way they make a speech on a platform. And I personally feel that. He has a very good moral character and I think he certainly deserves a lot of attention from the voters of this state because I think a lot of what he says and what he stands for are very important to voters. I'm not saying that people should run out and vote for him but they should definitely listen to what he has to say and then make up your own. That's great. You've got a million illegals out to L.A. County.

We're going to have a press thing outside of those books just like. It was totally against someone so put them on a book and I bet a box a box and someone took it. The students took it to the office. Is that how you described her. Is that different from a lot of your other teachers. Yeah. I can honestly I can honestly say she's the best teacher I've had seen it. I mean I've had a lot of good teachers but if. I had to pick the best and the one who I've learned from the most. It would have to be her because not only am I learning English but I'm learning like not values. It teaches you to make your own values through life you know. And that's the most important thing you're going to learn throughout your career. No matter what you do. So it's I mean it's I'm definitely gonna miss her. Fire her. Definitely. Well we're not sure it's a done deal yet. No but. School board is not going to go against her superintendent most likely so. Yeah.

And there's an appeal process. Oh right. But it's the process in between that you have to worry about. So you what. What are some of the things he said at the school board here and how do you feel about this. Well the first school board meeting we went to on May 8th. I thought we were treated Harlem. They were wicked rude. Last year while running for Governor Wilson promised California voters he would not run for president. Here's the news take. Would you assure the voters here tonight that you'll feel like you're a complete four year term. Yes I will Jim. Pete Wilson has now broken that promise. Meanwhile former Tennessee said Is there anything else pertaining to this. They never answered my question directly. Then they said to go back and deal with the administration. But I found out the day after I didn't I didn't know this when I went to school on the day after that our. Class President had gone to our principal and he said that it was the school board. So technically we did go to the

administration before we went to the school board. So we went to the school board they told us to go back to the mistress. The next day we had a meeting with our principal. And just it was all circles. No there's no answers at all. And in the run around yes. Oh like any like you know all my friends. That are really have to say we've been activists for 15 to 20 at least in both classes junior and senior and stops are they're too young to know. Well the sophomore books were never distributed. I don't think they even really realized that one of the books they took was too big. For them. I think you're right. That's when it never read never get their books right. Right. So 15 to 20 between both junior and senior classes. Yeah. And you feel like you just got the run around. With the principal and the school board. Yeah. Then we went back to the school board meeting. Fifteen time now to try and learn. This is just the most recent one. I mean I'm sure you've seen the

papers and said that they cannot give us any answers and everything I ask them they're saying there is policy. And that's why the books are taken. There's this policy didn't follow I'm you know I asked my teacher you know exactly and she said no. She said there's no policy that she's seen you know and you would think if there's this policy that these folks have to follow. That they would have pointed it out to her. While they're going through it. Now I know this book didn't go through this policy like versus policy coming from scientists. So I asked to see a written copy. I have yet to receive it but they did say they will get it. So I just I'm interested to see when this policy where it is. It's interesting. I wonder if you'll see. Yeah. Well Steve ROSAT shook his head yes like he will get me one but I haven't gotten one yet. So I plan to contact him and ask for a copy. Does this mean. Does this upset you. You're upset.

It upsets me a lot because. I just I see this you know I'm it makes me sit here and wonder what. The school system's going to be like because I have a brother who was in first grade and a sister who was in for it. And it's just I grew up in a different area during my life. You know when you were young in your formative years. So I mean are you still learning. I mean I think I've learned enough of myself and what I see to know the difference and just I'm seeing this whole school system as like a joke. Cause you're not your only time is one sided. It's almost like you're being taught like religious beliefs kind of secretly like that. I just I see it as a lot of the school members bring their personal and like religious beliefs into it. And I just I've seen that since eighth grade when I don't know if you're aware of our imagine our class song Imagine we couldn't sing that because it said no heaven no hell and no God.

So told me that and I'd forgotten and so I mean it's just it's a sin to me is the same thing again. I just I think it's ridiculous. And it just makes me wonder what my brother is like when he he graduates you know because I mean I can see a difference in him already. Like just like compared to more more close minded then like our family. Like my mother my father open minded. You know I'm open minded. My sister and she I mean she grew up in this town too. So I mean I'm seeing them more close minded as we would like them to be. One thing their teacher mentioned to me was that. She wanted to put out these books to counteract all the negative stereotypes that are that fair. Do you see that stuff do you see it in your eyes. Oh we are super. I now know I know of a few students that are gay and I mean I I don't personally talk to them and I

personally talk to them about it. You know like what. This specific issue done to them. I mean I'm sure it upsets them. What do you see why you haven't talked to them about this particular issue. But are you aware. You know. There's bad news. Oh yes. Well. They really specifically name like a person but you'll hear them talking about in the book faggot this in like just like they should all die just really bad. And just negative things. I mean horrible as it is and. I don't know how hard it is. You know my. Well I'm friends with. I'm very good friends with a gay student. He's not gay he is gay. He's not seeing it anymore. But I mean I still hear them talking about him now after he's already left you know they still say things and the things they say I mean he's a very good friend of mine and just it's they

don't they don't look at him as a person and that's why. Like I agree exactly what you know his calling him saying is at his books. I don't think you necessarily change everyone's minds. But I think it would give them more like another side. I mean you just be making them enough to realize you know maybe I shouldn't see that you know something like that. I mean if he could just make one person realize that like you know I like gay basher whatever that one person I realize that. I mean I think in the boxes it has done its job for me. I'd like to see it reach more than that. But if it just reached one person I think that would be. On you will get. Thank you. That's good to. Hear. I know that news is coming. All right. this. Even if it's not six weeks. The market would have been most. That's the. You mean like the parents. I can understand where they're coming from. You know because everyone has a right to their own opinion. But I think everyone has a right to their own opinion. They need to let their child decide for themselves. True maybe they don't think that they should read something like that but at the same time if they're not getting exposed to it at home where they're getting exposed to it in high school is it not just prepared academically but socially and is anyone who's going to leave this town this area and go to see to like a big city if they actually are safe. Some of the things they do they're not going to make it at all. And it's like I mean these parents aren't realizing that it's hurting their time or something I'm helping them. I mean if if their child comes to that conclusion then that's fine. I mean everyone has a right to their opinion. I personally disagree with them I think everyone should be treated equally no matter who they are or what they are.

But I don't think the parents need to like realize that their children should be able to make that decision not them. I want to ask. You about the possibility of your teacher getting fired. There is this doozy of his verses over there. So it's not inclusion by any means. Is the grounds for them firing her I think are totally ridiculous. They're saying she's incompetent teacher. By far she's not an incompetent teacher at all. I mean she has one of the hardest curriculums I think in the whole school. And. You learn so much in her class. There's no they are saying she wasted time she and she reached class time and in this case in one day we and that was the day that we clung to that. And she went in and she just she I mean actually was like a review from everything else we've learned like

what so-and-so said about integrity and things like it was actually like a review to at the same time I thought it was kind of neat. And that was it. That's not nothing else. No class time. We haven't even discussed it. And the truth is there were two. Guards or two dads up here. Esther felt like what else 1714 family up to.
