Description
01 A majority of young African-Americans feel disenfranchised by government, yet most also believe that they can make a difference by participating in politics. Thats just one of the many findings of a national survey released today by the Black Youth Project. The survey examined the attitudes and experiences of nearly 1600 black, white, and Hispanic Americans between the ages of 15 and 25 and asked them questions on topics ranging from gender roles, health, and sex education to race, government, and politics. Adaku Utah is a youth organizer for the Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health in Chicago who says the findings regarding sex education and political involvement resonate particularly with her work. University of Chicago Political Science Professor Cathy Cohen is the principal investigator of the Black Youth Project . She says policymakers and pundits too often rely on their own perceptions of what young African-Americans feel and experience, and the project stems from a need to hear from black youth themselves.
