Let's see we also heard from this year's orchestra from the below best hear below group album that's on the globe. Start label and that should be out in the US on CD sometime soon we heard them doing a coat check Rimsky coat check from former Yugoslavia and we began with a miserable brass band from the north east here in the US with their version of Harlem Nocturne. We're going to be joined live in the studio in just a little bit by this law and the Balkan brass band. New York's own and part of the reason they're here is to Mota concert really a benefit concert they're involved with. It's the golden festival the date is January 14th at
context studios Twenty Eight Avenue in the East Village like the U.S. will be there and lots of other musicians as well and you can even take part two if you're interested. We'll talk a bit more about that later. But that's again Saturday the 14th 28 ave in a context studio as you can see our guests shortly. Slightly band and lots of other people as well as Lenny Tuesday dance a statin are going to play some more brass band music to get warmed up for a bit of Mexican grass band music. Yes.

Volume 2 We also had a carnival band from Antigua on an old favorite the brass band from India from their big hit album now on CD brass band Vol. 1 on the tips label you can find out all your Asian stories in Jackson Heights and Journal Square in Edison and places like that would see also for the piece brass band with their High Life him. That said taking off one of a series of wonderful compilations on the pan records a series that I bring out from time to time called Frozen brass Vol. 1 and 2 and you can find that pretty much all over the place. Big and small record stores. Frozen breast I wanted to and it's also frozen frozen breast from top. Let's see and we had banned us in a law and say other Cotto from Mexico and also Mexican pop brass band or bond a group bond up in Kenya and that's where we stand this is WFMU Upsala college. And I'm Rob wasted on you and our guest tonight. And here they come thanks to the wonderful engineering magic performed by
Irene Trudeau behind the controls. This lot used the Balkan brass band Hello thanks for coming back again this is our second annual visit from you guys thanks so much for coming in making the trek out here. All right how do you want to start off. All right George. Check. And.
The fourth. Thank you. Thank. You and.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. For. Through and through.
Thank you. For who. You are and. Thank you. Past the slide he used the band live in the studio here at WFMU
and where we go now. What do you guys have in mind. Right. We're here to shamelessly plug this festival we're sponsoring next week we start with that. This is it's called the golden festival. And it's this is the tenth year we've done it it's a celebration where we invite all our friends or musicians to come and play with us and we invite all our friends who are dancers to come and dance and all our friends who are listeners and Partiers to come and party and it's a really great time. We've been doing it as I said for 10 years and this year like other the last several years we'll probably have 20 different acts play through the night to different rooms. Saturday night the 14th Antec studios. It's a lot of fun. Where do the bands all come from I mean is it sort of from the folk dance scene is it you know most of the music is Balkan music they'll be a little bit of Scandinavian maybe a little Cajun. We might
even have some country western or something late in the night klezmer music too. So it's our friends who like to come and have a good time and contribute to a real bash of a party. And it's also sort of a benefit isn't it. Yeah we the last several years have donated the profits from the festival to the International Rescue Committee a group that provides refugee relief to people all over the world and in particular or to target our money to the efforts in the Balkans. All right and a day to get it's Saturday is the concert right and context to Dios. Well concert dance party and party extravaganza and strive against. 28 ave a between E.S. and east Third Street in New York and great. So I will give you another sample of the kind of rip roaring music will play here. We're going to do next some a talk show check in 60 to get this done. Thank you.
Thank you. I think. You'll. Like yeah yeah. Yeah. Yeah yeah. Yeah. You think you. Think. You're cute. That there's a large band playing live in the studio here on WFMU. If you don't
know they're in New York based band and perform brass band music sort of in the Balkan tradition and play gigs around New York as well as all over the place maybe even been to former Yugoslavia and did quite well there and played on TV and the whole the whole nine yards. Do you guys have have you had any contact with any of the bands over there in the last couple of years at all or have any idea what. What's up with them. Well the only contact we got was from someone who was looking for work here in the United States because it's difficult times over there right now and the brass bands there are like us have between 9 11 people so it's difficult for ordinary people to hire that many that big a band they come play for a wedding or ceremony type thing so there's a little problem for bands although they're still having their annual festival of brass bands and they all are. Yeah.
So hopefully you guys sooner or later be able get back back over there and hopefully things will work. Yeah like he's still here and we'd like to see that for all of the people you know they're all right guys so yeah go ahead yeah. You dressed before where some of the bands are going to be at the festival are coming from we also have some groups coming from Boston and a Greek group coming from Boston a Greek group coming from Philadelphia. Often we have people coming from D.C. this year Summers come from California Cleveland all around the East Coast and special friends from the west coast often make it also to come and play. Wow. So it's quite at this is this is a this is the big sort of concert party again on the 14th this Saturday at context studios 20. And that's that's a milieu of we're very familiar with the you we play in the middle of the dance floor often with the dancers swirling around us as we play. With a tremendous interaction between us and the dancers. And folks who are interested can actually learn how to
do that. Most of the basic dances that happen on Friday night where it's really the first night of our festival. This happens at the Hungarian house in Manhattan on 213 East Eighty second Street. So there's a dance class there between 7:30 and 9:00. And then three hours of live music that evening so people can get kind of a preview and a taste of things to come. So it's not a nice sort of a two part thing I guess we should emphasize that on Friday the 13th. Right. Friday the 13th that's uptown at hungering house 2080 second in the big concert party on Saturday the 14th that context you know studios if anybody wants it you can also call me here because here in the studio and well we'll give you all that information over the phone at 2 1 6 7 8 7 7 4 3 6 7 8 7 7 4 3 This also might be a nice thing I would think for musicians and dancers to come and check you guys out also check out sort of the whole the whole scene and maybe meet some people and maybe be involved in it next year. It's just a tremendous amount of fun with all the variety of music and it's also a terrific spread of food and beverages that are part of your entry
fees. So it's just a nice place to hang out and even observe if you're not interested in dancing. It's just a really great event. All right. So I think we probably talk enough when we play another tune. We're going to play a tune that we'll have with it. Linda Hunt is here with us as we often bring people in to sing with us and play with us. And she's going to sing a tune called right. Now.
This is WFMU East Orange at Uppsala college where he stood. Vinyl Rob
here I reinjured out behind the controls and in the studio across the glass there's a lot of Balkan brass band with a wonderful vocal piece. They're friends you should know that there's a lot used the band has a couple of records that one of them is called No strings attached it's on the rounder label and the other one is called Golden lips music of Eastern Yugoslavia on the global village label and that's a cassette which I think is also coming out now on CD and it's a lovely label to be especially wonderful of you to patronize that. That label global village. All right and where do we stand what what's next for the new city band here in the studio it to me. Fm you going to work at their signal. Yeah we had we had rehearsed this all the way. We had so much fun you the last time we thought it would just happen spontaneously. Yeah. Well you know one of the fun things that happened to us the last time we were here is that we
got invited to be in a small movie around you remember that phone call but it was a it was a lot of fun for us and in that we we played some of the music from the album and a couple other tunes that were going to play a tune from that that run. Two years before the name with the name of the film was not if we all got it so efficient yet. Scuse me wrong tense again. Yeah it's 15 minutes more or less. Producer film Madeline Schwartzmann and we had a lot of fun. Madeline was great the rest of the folks in there and they'll be there Saturday night fact looking to hear what other bands are doing. Fine. Whereas you can meet a fellow by the way you know at the festival we are having a raffle and we're going to raffle off a copy of this film. One of the things we're doing to raise some money for this relief effort with the International Rescue Committee and a copy of that video is going to be one of the raffle prizes.
Wow. Well that's that's something special because otherwise especially if they take well I don't even want to think about it but they take our public TV station off the air you may never see it on TV. Yeah. But let's hope that doesn't happen. The dates again the 13th Friday the 13th at Hungary and house and Saturday the twenty the 14th and twenty Eighth Avenue in a context studio slightly used and other friends will be there dancing and playing and to support the Rescue Committee in the vault for the Balkans potential rescue committee Yanks. This is what we have and East Orange was our college just to make it official. And do I play another song that we think you want to take one of us. Actually we took it from the same band I think it was the first piece you played earlier tonight. It's by the same the same band we heard it and we liked it so we sort of picked it up and now we're going to play it for you. That was Bessie there's a band I think. OK. Excellent.
Thank you. Thought. The phone. With her.
Thank. The phone. For. A while. Thank you.
This is Debbie FM used in the misty Balkan brass band performing live in the studio and they will be appearing on Friday and Saturday nights along with all sorts of other groups and dancers and so on. At the 10th Annual Golden a festival and all profits from that event will go to the International Rescue Committee to aid refugees in the Balkans the venue's again Friday the 13th of Hungary and has 213 East Eighty second Street that's a dance workshop. Plus live performers with new city and friends and then on Saturday the 14th context to Deos Twenty Eight Avenue A between East second and third streets. That's a big performance dance party with lots of bands including a
Balkan brass band who are our guests live in the studio. Context is also a s well recording studio so you can go check it out I guess while you're there although I don't know if they'll make it let you make a recording. Then on Saturday night but you could peek around I suppose. All right well thanks guys for coming in again. And that was a lovely song that last one a coat check correct check my pronunciation pardon my my pronunciations. And that refers to a kind of a dance doesn't it. Yeah. Church means dance more or less in Romany dialect but it's it's also there are variations of that word in Bulgarian and Turkish dialects. Check check check. Cha cha cha. They can all mean the same thing which is you know dance. How do you get most of your songs from what you call a specific brass band repertoire is it a broader sort of folk music repertoire what would you say.
Most of what we draw we take from well the the bands with beards take their music in part primarily from the folk repertoire but they'll also play pop tunes and then there's a set of tunes that we tap into that are from the Romany community the gypsy community over there that they might not be played very often for the other communities even though there are many bands going play for the Slavic communities but they might have some tunes that they would play only for their community. And in fact I think our next tune is going to be one of those it's called of Ron Young for the town and southern Serbia called for Anya where there's a large community of Romany people there and they they play a lot for each other they're a whole bunch for five or six brass bands at all kind of reside in about a 10 kilometer radius there are 20 kilometer radius and it's a real hotbed of this kind of music and we draw a lot of inspiration from from those folks from
going and visiting them and hanging out with them it's a lot of fun. All right. We're going to play a tune from Don yes. Oh.
