Good morning. This is Rosana rich. Your local herbalist for a healthier main. The last frost despite careful attention to covering plants killed off the last of Minister shims trade modulus. Mr shim the topic of today's herbal update. Now you might think that they're biting peppery taste. Limits them to only suitability for mustards but have you ever tried eating a whole plain distortion flour or adding the flour in the leaf to a salad. The truly elegant spiral flowers and wavy margined leaves do add a certain zing to fresh foods but they are also medicinal. In the 16th century the Spanish conquistadores introduced Mr. shims to Europe from Peru. They were grown in kitchen gardens in Europe for centuries and commonly used as food distortion comes from the Latin
phrase meaning twisted nose which refers to its peppery taste and the accompanying facial grimace. Its botanical name Tre paleo modulus comes from the Greek meaning trophy because it's flowers in leaves resemble helmets and shields. Consequently Mr shims symbolism became synonymous with patriotism. Legend has it that on hot summer days sparks were emitted from Mr. Xi's heart due to the high content of phosphor gas and the stir are powerful anti-microbial. Now I would like to take a moment to clear up some verbal confusion. Often I hear folks refer to plants such as ecan Aysha goldenseal chaparral or any other plant with anti-microbial properties as herbal antibiotics. There is no such thing. The literal
translation of antibiotic is into life. Herbs can be anti-viral like St. John's Wart or lemon balm antifungal like calendula and use neah or antibacterial like Oregon grapefruit or Barbarie herbs have certain biochemical constituents that stimulate the immune system and fortify the body's defense mechanisms to bring the body into balance. I think there is fear and confusion at times about plant remedies because inappropriate language is used to explain their uses. That was well-founded during the nine hundred ninety one to 1994 debate in Congress. And with the FDA over the dietary and Supplement Act part of the reason the regulations for the dietary and Supplement Act which include herbs is still not available is because of language. There is language of plants which is both specific and vague but more accurately just
unfamiliar. I believe as herbs continue to grow in usage and more research is conducted using whole plans and educational programs like the herbal updates are continually available to educate the public. There will be less confusion. Remember herbalism has always been the medicine of the people. This is a strongly held principle among herbalists today and providing information is what maintains herbalism in the realm of the people. So what about those beautiful red yellow variegated pink orange and deep golden Mr shims. Well they are specific for bacterial infections of the respiratory. Your unary and reproductive tracks while fortifying the body to fight these infections. Mr shims do not kill normal intestinal bacteria which is so vital to the essential nutrition required during consolidating the body's
defenses. Proper digestion and assimilation are fundamental to creating intrinsic balance in the body. Mr shims are best when they're used fresh or carefully harvested and tinctured fresh as a tincture. They're a suitable remedy for the common cold or flu combining equal parts of Mr. Shem garlic ecan a sure route and goldenseal creates an excellent formula to purify the blood and cleanse the lymphatics. Mr shims are renowned for promoting the formation of red blood cells. Another use for Mr shims and this application refers to the seeds is the external treatment of boils and abscesses by masquerading the seeds and adding a little hot water a poultice can be formed at a drop of lavender essential oil to the poultice and mix in well then placed in a stir poultice on a gauze pad and apply it directly to the
boil or abscess cover with a firm clean bandage. Remove between applications as the infection is drawn from the boil and allow air to circulate to the affected area. The seeds have also been known to have a purgative action so the next time you need anti microbial action consider the elegant Mr shim. Good morning this is Rosana rich. Your local herbalist for a healthier main Herbalism is often associated with women. Our planet is symbolized as Mother Earth the first herbalist were called witches and modern day care givers are predominantly women of the sexes. Women are the largest and most frequent consumers of health care. Now I happen to be one of these female caregiving Mother Earth which herbalists who believes in balance. So over the next few herbal updates I would like to focus on herbs that are specific for men. Mythology and legend support the association of men with healing. But somehow that has gotten lost in our modern day culture. Apollo and his sister Artemis where the twin patron of healing. Oh
yes I know that western medicine has been predominantly male oriented. But I'm talking about the folkloric connections where the stories of male healers that are passed on from generation to generation. Is it because men over the centuries have not developed a conscious interest in their bodies. Or because men have developed an innate trust in their body's natural healing process. And they have not had the need to explore the healing aspects of nature. Our culture hasn't always made a place for men to feel comfortable in seeking nature's healing gifts. That is changing. I have more and more men attending my herbal classes and when I attend herbal conferences the male attendance is ever increasing regardless of this modern day apparent lack of association of men with herbalism. Nature has provided a male pharmacopeia and saw palmetto
berries. The topic of today's herbal update is the first in the category. Saw palmetto berries are a male reproductive nutrient. This shrub is a member of the Palme family and grows in the southern states of Georgia Alabama Florida South Carolina and Mississippi. It favors low pinewoods Savannah's and thickets growing as high as six to ten feet. Saw Palmetto has fanned like leaves with sword shaped leaf blades that radiate from a central point whitish green flowers grace the plant in May through July. Turning to clusters of fleshy black fruit in October in November. The berries are best used when partially dried or when a chain sure is made of partially dried berries.
Saw palmetto is highly valued by the Native American Indians and was used extensively by the eclectic physicians in America from 1880 to the eight thousand nine hundred thirty when used to regularly saw palmetto berries have a direct effect on the male reproductive system especially the prostate gland. Science has shown that extracts of saw palmetto berries prevent the conversion of testosterone to dye hydro testosterone or DHT in the prostate gland. Saw palmetto extract also increases the breakdown and excretion of DHT. So why is the breakdown of an excretion of DHT so important. Current medical Fieri postulates that benign prostatic enlargement is caused by an accumulation of testosterone. The dominant male reproductive hormone in the prostate.
To stop US drone is converted to DHT within the prostate DHT causes cells to multiply in excess and eventually this cell proliferation is the cause of prostate enlargement for an irritated prostate gland. Saw palmetto combines well with Demi Ana and Yarrow saw palmetto is useful for prostitute itis impotence and your unary and bladder irritation. James Greene States in his book The male orrible. And I quote male organ symptoms that indicate saw palmettos use our enlarged prostate with throbbing aching dull pain of pain which often feels like it might be originating in the rectal area. Discharge of prosthetic fluid discharge of mucus or yellowish watery fluid accompanied with weakened sexual power and his tech ular
infection when associated within a enlarged prostate and quote. As always it is important to consult a qualified health care practitioner during these times. I just want to highlight for a moment that James Green's book The male orrible is the only herbal written specifically for men. It is an excellent and useful herbal with emphasis on special issues health issues just for men. I never heard of another herbal written for men but if you know of one please let me know so that I can share it with listeners. During one of my herbal updates saw palmetto not only correct Janet to urinary problems but also acts as a nerve tonic by relieving irritability and mildly sedating the nervous system. Early colonist and Native Americans recognize the value of the berries as a nutritive stimulating appetite and digestion and encouraging assimilation and thereby increasing
fat. Flesh and strength. Saw palmetto toning effects on the mucous membranes throughout the body makes it a useful remedy for colds and the expectoration of excess cattle. Traditionally saw palmetto berries have been used as a remedy for asthma and bronchitis. In scientific studies I saw palmetto has exhibited no significant side effects or toxicity. The holiday season is supposed to be a happy time but for many men and women it is a time of great stress for some of us the holidays can amplify that long term stress response into a grinding down phenomena that culminates into illness of some form. Stress is not specifically a male problem. It runs rampant in both genders. Today I want to focus on men and stress related issues. The Latin derivation of stress comes from strange aere meaning to bind tight. Whether internal or external stresses the response of our mind body and spirits to a demand. Hon. Celia a Canadian researcher Firas stressed as a dynamic process coining the term the general adaptation syndrome he characterized the dynamics of stress and an individual's response in three phases.
1. The alarm phase where one experiences that initial adrenaline rush reaction and animal survival response to the resistance phase wherein the body recovers to a level superior to the pre-stressed state. The nervous endocrine and digestive systems adapt. 3. The exhaustion phase where eventually there is depletion and breakdown of the recovery that was previously achieved in the resistance phase. The exhaustion phase occurs when there is continual exposure to the stress or without relief the adrenal glands initially swell in response to that demand but then exhausted after chronic stressful bombardment long term unabated stress can be an occupational hazard of shift work consistently long hours physical adverse conditions boring or repetitive work demanding
responsibilities with constant deadlines or an ending financial woes useful herbs for symptomatic relief of short term stress include skullcap kamma meal lavender cramped dark and black cohosh room for that long term in big US unending stress. Herbs like oats vervain and dammy Yanna. The topic of today's herbal update come to mind. Peter Holmes author of the energetics of Western herbs says that Demi Anna deserves the status of a young tonic from both Chinese and Western point of view. The kidney Young is boosted in every imaginable symptom found under this syndrome is relieved that is a lavish praise for this tropical medicinal but not unfounded from the Western perspective Damietta exerts a restorative influence on the nervous system. It is a therapeutic boon to long term stress
related conditions with a tendency towards depression fatigue and loss of appetite. Because Demi and nourishes and regenerates nerve cells with long term benefits. Dammy Ana balances and Tona fi's the hormonal system its ancient reputation as an aphrodisiac may or may not be warranted here in my humble opinion. Fatigue is not sexy long term stress yields long term fatigue when stress and fatigue are eliminated or at least well-managed sexual feelings are more apparent pharmacologically Demi L.A. does contain alkaloids that have a testosterone like action which may account for its use to strength in the male sexual system. Demi Anna is an appropriate Herb where there is a sexual component to anxiety or depression. Chronic debility due to
physical or mental overwork or illness are optimal indications for its use. Demi Anna promotes clear thinking lift spirits and generate strength. Demi as a bitter principal promotes digestion and regular elimination the genital urinary system is directly affected by demi and by increasing reproductive Chey Damietta relieves impotence premature ejaculation urinary incontinence and irritation. Demi and his effect on the pituitary gland the gland that is responsible for hormonal harmony is balancing and regulating whether the irregularity is one of deficiency or excess. It is this property that has earned him the end of the reputation of being called for tearing the literal meaning of an FA tear it is either acid or base herbalists use the term when describing herbs that do what the body
requires balancing both deficiencies and excess conditions. The effect on the pituitary has also made Damian A useful for menopausal women. Rosemary glad Starr my friend and teacher offers the following recipe for stress relief that she calls lifelong wine one Panix ginseng root one quarter ounce of the following herbs Damietta a straggle coriander seed and star anise steeped in your favorite red or white wine. Being sure that the wine completely covers the herb let it sit for two weeks. Strain and poor wine back to its original bottle. Rinse the ginseng root and add it to the bottle. Take two tablespoons daily and enjoy. Too much Demi and I can cause insomnia and headaches while Demi and I may sound like a wonder herb. Remember there are no panaceas and no substitutes for a balanced life. Consider other stress relieving
modalities along with your herbal tonics such as regular exercise massage meditation yoga or tai chee aroma therapy and expressing feelings to families and friends. Welcome this holiday season with a renewed spirit and a little less stress. If you would like a bibliography of today's herbal update please send a self-addressed stamped envelope to me. Without adequate circulation there is no nourishment or oxygenation which is vital to survival. Our hearts are also the chamber of our feelings. It is through our hearts that we communicate with ourselves and one another. James Greene recommends six principles to keep our heart safe. 1 Put your emotional life in balance. Express your feelings and honor your tears. They are the nectar of the heart and can quench your emotional thirst to play and laugh frequently.
