- Description
- Newark Boys Chorus: Roots takes a unique and heartwarming approach to documenting South Africa's ongoing transition from racist police state to multiracial democracy. In spring 1998, music director Donald Morris and a group of 10- to 14-year-old musical ambassadors traveled from their inner-city New Jersey home to tour South Africa. The program follows their extraordinary journey, capturing the overwhelming warmth of the group's South African hosts, as well as the boys' musical triumphs as they perform in concert at churches and cultural festivals, sing on television, shoot hoops with some new friends in a schoolyard, and join in harmony with a South African youth chorus. The dulcet sound of the boys' voices weaves throughout the one-hour documentary as the children discover a deep connection to the music, dance and cultural traditions of their ancestors in South Africa.
