And. By the Compromise of 1850 Congress strengthened the fugitive slave law which required the runaway slaves to be returned to their owners as a result the Wisconsin Supreme Court and its federal counterpart became locked in a battle the test of the Constitution and the extent of states rights in 1854 of Iraq abolition the Sherman booth violated federal law by rescuing a fugitive slave from jail whose was arrested by a federal marshal and later convicted of the crime. The Wisconsin Supreme Court declared the federal law unconstitutional and fried food. The case reached the U.S. Supreme Court in 1859. Did Wisconsin through its high court have the power to declare the fugitive slave law unconstitutional. By unanimous vote the U.S. Supreme Court upheld it supremacy in the interpretation of the Constitution and cited the obligation of all judges to uphold its mandates and Chief Justice Heffernan with a constitutional minute.
