- Here and Now, Gwen Moore elected to Congress, A former welfare mother - Gwen Moore - has journeyed out of poverty to the state legislature and soon to the U.S. House of Representatives. The victor in this month's congressional race Gwen Moore joins us from the Atkinson Public Library in Milwaukee. four-year-old kindergarten, Advocates of early childhood education - four-year-old kindergarten - say an early start is one of the best investments public schools can make reducing public assistance money down the road. Just under half of Wisconsin's school districts offer four-year-old kindergarten. Charity Eleson, the Director of the Wisconsin Council on Children and Families joins us now. The council received a $1.3 million grant from the Joyce Foundation for a new program called Early Education Matters. Rhodes scholar, Time now for our person of the week. More than 900 American college students applied to be Rhodes Scholars this year. That's a prestigious scholarship program that provides two or three years of study at Oxford University in England. Just 32 students in the whole U.S. were selected, one from Wisconsin. He's a graduate of Eau Claire Memorial High School, spent two years in the Mediterranean as a missionary and is currently a senior at UW-Eau Claire. Congratulations to Chauncy S. Harris Jr. who joins us now. Lords of the Ring - book about UW boxing, Boxing - a sport UW athletes have won eight national championships including 38 individual first place titles. In the 30's, 40's and 50's boxing brought UW-Madison athletics its highest high, attracting 15, 000 to the old Field House, and the lowest lows.
