A. A long walk up to the day from the ride. On today's program we're going to cover the use of a Down river ride. And a down river rail. We're going to be talking with one of the oldest guides in Henderson harbor a fellow that started fishing here in 1937. We're actually referred to as the mayor of Henderson Harbor. Your attention. I hope you'll stay with us for today's edition of rod. Funding for modern real was made possible by grants from cotton Cordell. Heaven. And rebel products for fishermen everywhere and buy a ranch electronics incorporated. Makers of electronic sonar and by dialogue Corp. rods and reels made for each other. I thought I'd take a moment at the beginning of tonight's program to. Go over the
US of A Down river rod and a downriver reel. I've got in my hands here. I knew that was given to me the other night by a good friend of mine Henderson guide Hank Stanek and on it is a diary 27 atrial and it has some of the attributes that I think are good and it downriver real I'd like to go over them with you. What you should have you done regarding trout or salmon. First of all as a reel that has a fair amount of line capacity. And a fair amount of wind capacity. In a line is heavy enough to fish a particular species that you're after. If it's a lake trout you might want to have a real wood line capacity that can handle a lot of ball pound test line. If you're talking salmon you're talking 17 or 20 pound test line. Now I know there are people out there in the audience that might argue the point with me. Some would say you need 30 or 40 and some would say we do it on 8 or 10 but I like to think that 17 to
20 phone test is a nice line weight to be using for salmon. I say that because you get a fair amount of fair wear and tear and chafe on a line as it goes in and out of a downer of a release or aside when a release or I know rigger really must take a close look at what. A good reel should have. It should have a good type of gray. And this is a level one real and I prefer them for down rigorous and you'll see why in a moment. But this style of drag right here. Is very easily adjusted. If you're fighting a fish because you can drop your fingers right into the slot and just turn it a little bit. The reel should have a good. Handle preferably one that's counter weighted. This is the counterweight here and this is the crank handle that gives it balance. When you're fighting a fire. The next thing it should have a fair amount of spool capacity. And you'll get a spool that has a red line
on it. Normally keep that reel filled to capacity with relatively new ally meaning that you should at least change the lighting once or twice a year depending on how often you fail. Remember that sunlight is the biggest single enemy of monofilament line. It will deteriorate monofilament ever slept in the sun on your boat tied at the dock for weeks. It will weaken it so you want to keep your monofilament line under shade as much as possible. The other thing a reel like that should have as a very positive click mechanism. Right here on the side of the wheel. Snaps on and off and should produce. A rather loud click when told by a fish. There's two reasons for that. First it's a night alert signal. If a fish hits the line.
The trick is that when you set a real down in a down record. And you're letting it free flow with a spool open This is the locking lever here that for you is the school that allows that school to go out now if I were to take the click off and pull it. You'll see how easily you could get a. Meaning that the down river way going down. Would really mess up that rail if you didn't have some kind of drag on it to click or provide that for you. Let me show you how that works. I've taken this now a lot of the real retightened now I'm going to put the click on and that position will then open it like this. And you'll see that I can then pull the line out and with the clicker I'll try to hold it here next to my microphone so you can hear the click or tend to hold that from spinning free. So it stops it right there. You can get a little bit but it really doesn't tangle too much. Meaning that if I put this
into my downriver and Spot. The down or wait going down that click. Will act as a resistance and let that real pay out evenly. By a fish on back here and my special guest George tension George. A lot of the nasty way you write here Joyce. Damn it took it off the plane oh boy come on back you're dirty. Now as many years as you've been fishing here in Henderson Harbor you've never called a lake on Heaven. Oh well I think you got your first one on right there. For those of us who were. Calling to listen up. No don't touch us but they don't. Want to rock hip hop. Sure know how to fish on ice. Yeah sure he's all right I don't think he's crazy. When I don't want to talk you off today's Lead off the bat anyhow. I mean you've got to. You've got to point to some premium here you're dealing with you have with another. You still are not.
Got off. Got on but he was there. Hammered away I. Think in my life. I think it's gone. They are afraid maybe he's gone. Up and here. I think. They should get on my friend's. Daughter crying Oh no no no he's gone now but he's still rather ill. Yeah we got to get into that got to recheck the Balkans and we got to. See what he hit the wall you. Don't. Know how it went. We have sections for foreigners that morning once home. Take a look at it. Nancy plant Jim Parker I've come along with
us today. They were committed by our conservation we invited them to come out on a beautiful day like today to see how we use the super skinny to see how we use the down records because they're involved in a lot of census taking on the fish and I thought they might enjoy a chance to get out on the water and see how we do it. George and I are going to see if we can't catch him alike on a minute but I'd like to spend a moment to talk to you about this little animal right here. The down river rock. This is another style of real lessons a Megaforce down regular reality it's got magnetic. Drag on it right here that is much like the clicker did on the other one so this has really two ways of holding your line tight usually use a magnet here or you can use the clicker which is located right here. But I'd like to talk here for a minute about the rods that we use. One rule of thumb you're seeing a lot of graphite rods on the market. You're seeing an awful lot of boron rot on the market. Graphite and boron are
very stiff and very strong. The problem with buying a pure graphite rod is the fact that it is so stiff that when you try to bend it to put a set in it like this right behind me going down to the down river it is two steps and when you hit a heavy wave that Rod is so stiff that it will sometimes pop the release and if you set the release up tight enough to hold the line you run the risk of a fish hitting a line and not releasing it and swimming with it for half an hour before even though the fish is there. So what to look for you know down there to rob. Something from seven to nine feet long. I like 8 8 9 1/2. Graphite glass composition so that it has the properties. Of Glass. And it's able. To bend. It. Like Glass does. And yet have the strength. Of the graphite so graphite and glass. Composition. Half and
half. Is what makes a good downward a rod then a can bend. And hold in the down record. I hope that some of you out there who have been contemplating buying. Fishing rails and fishing rods for Don are agreeing. I found this helpful. Because there are wrong types to buy. A reel without enough blanket Passy at a rotted to a step to take an accurate set and a downgrade. George tensions growing in downtown Henderson city and the hub of the activity. How many years have you owned a marina and I think you've done forcing to have it right where it is. We bought a 1938. Was it around ever since that same building the way it is. Yeah the same building where we have the marinas. That we put up the gap and everything you know. You like that kind of business.
Oh yeah we. Only work 6 months a year. Or something to be said for that I'll tell you. At the time that you were doing the guiding with your father died too. Yes. Was that the same time of people like maybe Bob MacRae's dad learned to just dad all died still. Oh yeah I knew all of those fellas all the just legends to me. You know by the grace brother Lyle and nobody ever running did Jim Rudy did. The rest of the other guys can go and write with. Paul and. Some of those most of those fellows are all gone today. And here we are in Lake Ontario and in the modern style a fishing boat using down rigorous in all the years of ski you said to be the only person you ever saw before being dragged behind a boat. That's an interesting way to toll those skis but there's a lot of hardware out there when we get all hooked up we look at a bit of a porcupine out here
or just come out with me today to catch his first ever lake trout you never fished you know that when they said even back when you were growing guide you never went on my father route. Maybe we'll get lucky I ever caught a steelhead never caught one of the big fish. Another salmon. Oh I'm going to catch a bus first one today stick around. Well it took a number of years to get my friend George tension on the rod reel. And I think you probably already got a sense that he's a pretty colorful individual. George had never caught a lake trout. And I missed the first one for him. But it wasn't long and he was in the midst of a battle. With the second lake to. Willis lake trout wasn't to get away. Although it wasn't
very big. It was George tensions very personally. He elected to release it to Lake Ontario. So they could live and fight another day. While with their fish back in the water. I decided to have a little fun joy attention and try to convince him I had the ability to call fish. President President President was here. You go very nuts but I mean not as it is George I learned how to call fish from fishing experts and they get to make jump right now Paul says. I believe it is if. You. Guys think I'm crazy I'm going to destroy. This shall. We just call them. Oh yes. These years central casting that's a big word. For.
The thought of. What took place is this is you all. Here with your clear this line for me the fact that when we get up here for thought it was very. Bad. I know I call it myself where were calling from the property here that just a little. That's good man. Yeah I do quite enjoy it. I.
Like how I. Don't think I can call back you know what happened on the radio what he got on that line. That's not a five gallon bucket. O. So I don't make a believer of you yet. Right here. But the. Way to half way to the right. That way if it was like your way they'd give up their. Cattle and planet. Joy. Yeah. You're. Right there.
Is right not L.A. yeah I was. Preaching. This song. I thought that I liked our joy. And. I think that. We saved him that for the leper had him right there. And how it was that lamprey want to keep him here we can talk about. God. Don't you lose a lamp or a gun right here on the floor all right let's keep him off because I want to show that I hold the camera I want to put him in a libel suit he can recuperate. Why that's the behavior that decimates talking on Lake Ontario. Yeah there's a lot of model. Look at the teeth. Of the raft. I guess it didn't just rasp and then. Look at the past and they're going to look a little punk rock of love right out. That's down tough on like. You'll have to be very susceptible. I think it's because a smaller fish.
Or fish or whatever the. Leopard just prefers there have it. Came out and there was a lamprey on it. Just a minute. Back in the days when you first came into the lake and you were guiding Did you ever see those at all. Done. Wasn't till one after the Seaway human they came in my house basically about that time. Where I had to now say. Yeah that's. It you see them before the hunt. For that dead thing. Moron. That's not particularly big when you mean they get to be about marks on. Oh yes I think that he heard a. VOICE. Well if you'd be kind enough to get me and I thought there I'd better send him packing. I don't have any long days. What do you do with it.
Right. Yeah right. Yeah. There you go. Think. He won't kill anymore like hell. Now George tension had to have way I want you right back here. Imagine there where you are cause you are shaking your head and you're a bit of a doubting Thomas but you saw what happened in yeah. Yeah. What happened. I call leftish. Yeah any hit didn't get right. And you're caught up. Right now to keep this a secret because I wouldn't want the rest of the Henderson guys to find out about it. OK. I got a promise. But you know they'll say why they go say you see that. No I didn't see it. That fish hit right after I called out and you saw it. You're going to go scratch your head because your years of pushing you've never seen it right.
Oh I used to call black magic are OK. So you mean this isn't original with me while you're on Lake drone. It was different See Black Mass musical like Tonic top. Where do you put that. Oh Baghdad up. There for the visit raisers raise. You get you one more fish. George up there Jim. Yeah just goes to show you never close your mind to it. Technique. Might be mess it out on some good fish but I don't know about all of this yet. So I said How do you disbelieve or you want to see it happen again. Well all right go ahead. Get ready. Ok I'm waiting. You're doubting Thomases.
He said we took the whole thing right now take your left hand put it right up here on the your left hand over here have learned a crank radio and when we get your. Point neutralise the cafe here are George your ham in that place. That's a good question. Talk their way if. You like. I don't want to take the regular work of a pretty good place. For somebody that's left handed your handles I rise late and in good shape. Yes for one more time Gemma tunnel over to the left. I got to go for the pay for it all back. The Audi. Hey I like that man. You're going to play. Now
every time I come back into shore. You're there taking time. And imagine you see a fair number of the right person you don't because. Yes it is. I want to try not to hurt in. Trying to try to release a map or to. Get enough oxygen in the eye wall the next point it. Stalled out I caught it. Again. Jim shaking his hand up her the wheel. I got for the box where he gets points. You'll get them. They join to the extent that. Every. Time. I would get some oxygen right here we get a life isn't going to feels like that he'll come through in the film I think you'll be fine. This woman on the we're going to win the release of A.
High ranking. L.A. Dorner disbeliever you. Say call your mind a minute technique. Let's get some progress on a. Woman that you want to get on the ball. Oh I call them they call. Now tell me do you believe that. Well all said believe it now old fellow don't. Just dump it here again that's just a little thing on Harriet. I doto answer. I'd like. Back up back up. Get in my back. I got a. Foot in there again and.
Let's become come alive in good shape. Yeah well but. All. I ever caught at it. I've done a lot of thinking I've got just about everything else but never late for a. Little bit. Hard work all the time. Oh I. Was. Never on the porch.
I want to fly. So they came up my side. This Garcelle you've got yourself a steelhead. But yet. I still hear 200 good down there. I'd say we're looking at when you're here. Yeah probably silver in the lake though I think he'll. Yeah. I'm going for the White House if we can recuperate. Paul George's first name going to first make the same trip. I. Certainly. Told you what he knew and they're all using the news to take me home with the one I want. I'm going to call you them and selling them like. You would ever do right we get out. Yeah. In the area there in that live well lost Fisher come to a good
shape even a little steely I think is going to make it he's good enough I don't want to waste a lot of Lakers right. There when. He's healthy. But I think you. Just argue that even are easy. Here we. Want to get pretty colors. Now they're darker out here only they're stealing and he started to come too but I want to be sure he's going to make it rather than wasting. George Hanchen you all SON OF A GUN. They don't want any. More than me. Do we dare call for it. No I can't call for King Salman really pressing my luck. Well. Homo. I heard him. Smile here George. Ben an interesting turn of events the way the show evolved because
for a long time I wanted to get you out here bored or out of a lot have fun with it and learn a little bit about what the fishing was like back in the good old days. Henderson and. Bumped into Nancy several different times I watch them check it out and said to her the other day when I worked after it everyone when you and I had one day check in them and I said No I said Would you like one. See how it's done. If you watch then I figure it out. Then you'll call me. A good idea you like. We are done so they both came aboard aroud meal with George today and now. We have had a lot of fun. That caught a few fish. It's the thing that I can't quite figure out will be my can hardly be the water over two hundred twenty five. And one of the. Mystifying you know the numbers of the different depths. That they had. But. We hope you've learned a little bit something about Downer to ride on a little bit of something about downriver real. But I hope. If you don't take anything. Back. From this program at all you can take back the idea that you can never close your mind to a
new fresh technique. Great joy even a come to call it that right. We hope you enjoyed today's edition are not real that you'll be here next week. Why. Funding for a rod and reel was made possible by grants from
cotton Gordo. Heaven and rebel products for fishermen everywhere and by Lorenz electronics incorporated makers of electronic sonar and by dialogue Corp. rods and reels made for each other. A.
Welcome to another edition of Brighton real. We're here at the shores of Kingston Ontario like Ontario and man going to teach hillside how to catch small mouth bass. Local production of rotten rail was made possible by grants from Voyager Depot incorporated Banyan And Orleans Ontario meeting fisherman's needs to face drug sporting goods. Watertown New York. Cotton Cordell incorporated products for fisherman everywhere and blue or Johnson and sun's been up for it. Well Lisa McDowell if you're going to teach me how to best you betcha I think we've got a
good spot for a first met this young lady just yesterday before yesterday. And I've done nothing but a lesson for the last eight hours on that one thing I talk a lot. What is it that I think you talk about. Actually she's quite an item. She's written a number of fishing songs and your husband Joe was good enough to give me a cassette. And I think I've worn it out already. It's. Quite an outstanding piece of artistry I think if you fish half as good as you sing young lady you're not going to have some fun today. All right. We've slid in here close to Wolf I just left Kingston looking for you loose of small mouth bass water temps have been slow to warm if you take a look right now it's what we got for surface temp again. Sixty two point eight. That's good bass water they're just now living up there moving up late like say the water's
warm and so they've been slow to move up and get ready them and they didn't talk like you spent a couple days on you know we've been here for a few days you know where you can find the rocks you found the male bass fields I hear yet not yet. Well maybe they'll come up today. Now that would mean. Bigger water to figure. OK we're using these. I was using a little bitty crank bites and some little spinners to win you're a great fan of the ultralight. Yes. Now Joe warned me that sometimes you lose control when you catch fish. You have a tendency to get very excited and therefore drop the little hooks out of the little mounds. Why don't you and I slather the boulders in here I can see a ledge all along here and you could get even on the net back me you know how the water changes colors there. Well it's shallow enough I'm kind of a deaf ear here under six five to six feet so what I think the way this winds blow is kind of blowing us off I think I'll just fire it up slide around in here let her drift in.
Process is what I don't know so we're going to be a little careful on the water right up here when you run about a foot and a half. Which is surprising for both the sides but. A lot of bearing surface on the bottom holds fairly high. Oh we want to offer like yes planes. I don't call them. Thanks. I'm going to throw my. White. Big old. Right seems to be the preferred color. I'm just going to shut it off let's go straight. Home. Look at look like oh yeah I couldn't see him from back there. Oh yeah. There you go well I couldn't ask for a better position than this. I couldn't ask for a better position. I. Just want a boy small mouth and all that Subash help is a good one you're right in Iraq so it's a good fish bill. Not as big as I thought it might be though.
Why they nearly so they hit hard. Should it hit like a ton of bricks. Look at this. All that water so clear look at what Cordell. The more you're right out of the boat. He's going back to states out one. Look at that. Well that's nice. Looks like a male. You know Ariel don't want to get. Caught two of them on the corner to him and
reportedly hurt him help now. Nice They're quick too aren't they well they sure are. I love to watch you move in a lot and I think this big book. Oh yeah when you got one. Yeah you see what I got and I said oh look at this. I got a baby. I got a little rock bass yeah over her toes I'm ordered her to come up a little. You're supposed to teach me how to catch on to this one for one here called the rock bass an approach to variety here buddy. You know I don't want kids a little thing that we'll Cordell big oh what you might have guessed who I think when they thing else once in a while
but I always said spam me on an island give me one fishing lure to catch fish with. That's going to be it. One back this female be along a little while. Now with the three years it would make a good situation for us as if she had oh yeah I want to see a little baby one. Sometimes I prefer quantity over quality. Well I think I know where there's a quality bat prime right there. Oh look at this big one. Wow is he a monster right opposite those
rocks on thing right here kiddo. Have a burger after you have a good one. Yeah I was hard right. All or almost. See that Iraq best take my war that would have been embarrassing. You know like it gets right well after kid knew about it that's all. I wonder who is good at student bishop. Oh gosh my dad is an outlaw writer stop and fish and since I could walk home for a good little daughter of mine from there for a good walk I just in the last few years have been fishing with you know what I call a heavy tackle. I grew up just using worms and her main goals that line.
Well yeah but I think of rock look up on there you were in scrappy little devil you inviting rock on me. We're going to write a song about rock bass. They're everywhere they're everywhere. You probably can. What do you still use and I will quote it now and try this. Don't miss it when you buy. I got caught with my rod. This is called a fast track and it's just like the double take Chad Jr. my rebel but it's got a a different lip then it got a fart. They got a perch. I got a little one there. Well I thought of it is that there's some
grass in there to go. Yeah that's why I got dressed. Yeah. Have you ever fished competitively with your body. No I haven't. Well you know a little bit between ourselves but as far as tournaments go you know I've just haven't had much interest and I like it too much to put that kind of pressure on it I guess. Are you or your fish eater. Oh yeah. We ate some last night as a matter of fact that you know they're going to think this thing might be a little bit too deep. I just want to give it a try. You're going to go in the box. I think so. There's still the shell of it work. You know I think we poke around in here you know if I was your group was in you know. Yeah.
I hope I don't get stuck in these rocks if you have to see me when I get the biggest one so far. You go back to fish as to who has. Been in times of trouble. He said to me as he said in the role of religion in the show what. Are you going solo just now I want to read the words but I gotta get it how do I see it with you. I quit when I got the line across the line up money my bills not oh I have caught Well it's going to be fine because here it comes. You know how bears this is a sign of enthusiasm. For that one baby with a grandmother that was. Oh. Yeah. Let's. Just show you. Yes I do things like that myself sometimes.
I mean wink you always give you pictures of me in the tree fishing for tree bass. What has what have to be able to know where you get lost in the middle. No I just decided to throw in Iraq. I watched yesterday today I don't know what my problem is. Butterfingers I've see this brand new Learn to have it set up. There you go. This one all I want to jump on this is that was nice of you. That's a good place. You don't need it. You smack that Brasil Buffalo snookered all get out. It was the best. He gave him the order. Yeah but. Yes but you get the shirt gracile spinnerbait.
Oh nice one. Or look at look in boiling water. It's like a washing machine. I keep these one liners on Lisa because they're all in their song. And one of one of the songs that she sings. So that's the first time that you recorded. For. Us. Leading brand new things where you know.
There are those hooks right in there with your players red as they call these things. Ross two things up thank you and I called somebody that if he's going to get it's not me. There was another one rock bass that was he was in on the edge of that past and this or that Bethany you grab he. Now you probably want to know why I call my business a Catholic or DL
tells me Butch Maitland homeland fears face sporting good stores in Watertown. You know I love that he says why I why I why I on the side of so many calls about he says a lot of the whole order you. Know I Got It. We have actually it's a state because it looks like why I why I why. Well you you are not the first like. And I think that when there is a big win for born. I don't want to play there turn this thing around again and try one more time. I think you're well. What kind of a massive new guy out there. To put those together like that.
Like they said. Little. Part of your whole thing Adam let's get something. Right. A on. Your own you don't want me. Or you know all I want. They're like you wouldn't believe. No that's a good one that's a good one. You may talk me into before it's all over with but I'd like to try this it looks a lot like that. Colquhoun have 13 now not yet. There is fair. You know no overt conflict you have lives and you know how it was I'm sure. That's not fair or snaps out of my hand. Oh that feels good. No I think it is a big one. I want to take on that drive like a big. Fish.
Like one of the groups I think they think oh I don't know you might need a couple pounds. They don't get tired easily that you know they don't take care of them are there for a lot of those windows. That's one of your good morning. Oh boy. Oh that's a nice one. Well I wake up each morning with a dangerous type thing that can only be cured by it. I'm a doctor is saying all morning that all you say you're lonely. Go try out that line. Roberts I want me to go big mouth Baez. Can be a big don't buy that my love in a way I go just a little piece on down the road to a bar home

That's how. The devil is now the world has got the fans down on the bottom with a big lump or is a big old Iran Iraq and. I don't blame you bro. There is one thing I sure of winning Grammys that were your no no slack come to gobble gobble snack is no gobble gobble by as it was best not to get it back. That's because
the devil is to go back there. The wind in my hair said No where there was no. Dragons when. Boise right. That rare back carnival ride relie said my orange farm track. Bright boy had it when it broke it was the band's Hillsdale and Second Life in Turn 1. Washing machine that will blow women in circles like a merry go round searching for limbs and underbrush and. He might have got away this time for eons but I guarantee you he's gone see me again and when he did he is me a little bit you know.
That's an adult. Never let. My. Boy. As a good boy. Yeah fun though I've no special dislike about Sonia. Yeah but your for sure as well though primarily not small. Yeah but like I told you earlier I love this ultra light and I just assume catch brooming Croppy and just anything little by it really. Boy he's really good. Are there still a few in here and we get just enough room for one here we were in here a little bit earlier before lunch and we knew there were a lot of bass here but we just couldn't get close enough with the light conditions or get a little lower now. You get a little bit of a friendly What's matter is really good things that we try to take that think sideways.
You get stuck call taking off. OK I get worried when I work on time. Go at it. Time to work for a white one here but I know what you're doing why you really you know it's not about your making sure he was real good so I keep busy so you could have a lot of. That's better than trying to shake him off I know it makes me sharpen hooks Elisi you want to shop it keeps me busy and out of his way of putting it best. It's bigger than that last one I had a good last scrap. A lot of what scrap in a fight. Same thing as brain ice bass. Yes I don't think he's a big as the one you had Lisa but he's not far from it. All is not a big one right behind him. Oh I hope that I can save him cause I let that lie and
he inhaled it. Pretty good. I don't need your pliers or shit. Well if worse comes to worse now we can't even. That's. Sounds like I just tear you up. Oh OK well good. How's that. It's nice MY LITTLE hear me. That's moose. About the same size as when I got. Out. But I don't want Of course I can make it bigger than. I like now and then. Thank you very good but if you're good. There's no right or anything. It's been a long day. Then along big you better believe it or spent a fun day. I am when I had a more fun picture with somebody. Your enthusiasm for fishing was only parallel for your ears and for the song. I'll tell you. For the
first time I listen to you sing I knew you were a fisherman. No question about it. Hope you had a good time. I had a wonderful idea. I guess I got a call on the big picture. Just. OK I get it right.
