Welcome to our show. Thank you we're so happy you're here. Oh it's a treat to show off part because it's looking well even though we're in the midst of a hot season. And I'm going to have as we walk to class and you can happen now and see a lot of new interest new plan. Right. We're going to be talking about containerized God today. So if you happen to have a life you know this show is for you. Make you know and anyone who wants to grow anything in a container it's the plants you'll see are happy and healthy. You can grow them in any number of ways. And. God. Can have some.

That's right. That's right. Or if we. Were in a garden which we call mostly men. And this is to show people the variety of plants in the mint family and they're just fabulous things that grow well one of my favorites in here is the African blue Basil. And all this. Still it is it's a giant if it's nonstop it's just a big and sturdy fragrant Basil quite different and it's a new bow softly that you can use it for cooking a lot just for its bold look in the garden. It's unknown and then. Color right here and. Kind. Of throughout the show. I think you'll see that as we go through. I wanted to point out this great groundcover I'll just cut you a big segment off of it it's the creeping English annual Now this is a wonderful groundcover and it's a great companion plant that helps to keep insects away.

Just say you know if you've ever tried an herbal flea collar. I don't know I could smell you know. It's got a. Chemical in it called pull a gun and it does keep fleas and other insects away now so I could just kind of make a note of that that I got your coated the herbal flea collar and it has a wonderful groundcover I have it around my steps with the border of rosemary. Trapped him in a Tajik. It is Hardy. Yes. So you'll have it year after year after year and sometimes the dives back and it's easy to route from cuttings or divisions and so I keep a few plants tucked in here and there to use for replacements if I need them. Now we've got a few. Interesting little plants in this combination. Most beautiful golden oregano. And it's the crispy golden oregano. And it's used for its golden color. In the landscape see how the wrinkled leaves are so beautiful they have a funny kind of pattern they do now as we go through I wanted to touch mostly but I'm going

to blend together the herbs that we collect for their fragrant. Good. They're good. Now this. Kind of to clear up some confusion this is called false Rosemary and it's actually from Australia. It's called western India it doesn't have a fragrance like true Rosemary because flour is like it's true very like rosemary but it is in the mint family and that's why it belongs in this garden of mostly men but I'll show you the true Rosemary we can compare and knowhow you know per. Hour to go ahead it's exactly. Now this is a beautiful myth variegated pineapple man. And I love this Pour the hot color of the foliage. So brilliant with its white green Nobel. That line I'd like to use that as a garnish on dessert. Oh do it but I mean it's aromatic and cold go in sachets sat upright. He's good at that as true.

Down here is that Sage which you would probably use if you were cooking turkey for another strong flavored meat. And some people like to make a tea with it. This is Purple Sage the grandest stage that is most common and the Purple Sage which a lot of people select for the lavender foliage. How much does this have a little it does a little lost his life or death of Gracie. Now if you have cats you have to be sure to wear this. Beautiful half hearted half is what I can. Pull this off. This isn't like a lot of. The smaller read the add ons to be a more beautiful cat more door. And I love to grow roses. And. Container. To me. While my cat died that he leads the way. Now not one haha. I was told that if you put a rubber behind you and you know to keep the fleas away try it and see if it works. And now let's look for the real Rosemary. Now this is actually a variation because this is called Golden Rosemary and if you look closely you'll see a little bit of golden color in the leaf. Now smells up that's

highly perkier than it used to be used as a youth and then as a stewing or you could take the easiest through them on the floor to improve your whole we had Dio do exactly that and I love to make a tea with that. So in in those payments garden fragrances the theme of course but beauty too. That's right. We want people to try a lot of these in their own. Are any kind of and a great many of them. I would imagine such as the rosemary is a house for the winter. And if they are. Not a lot of them are also plants that could be brought inside and kept over for the winter. Andy the term I use Let's go see the next container garden or just some Let me let you read ahead to one of these that they spout is really really wonderful corner of the world. You're going to bring a robot take the Fifth. Yeah. All the traffic that goes by. You watch all the police. Rush up and down. AS. You sort out.

How. I would feel. We don't like to have our next sitting over there but on the basis you're not going to. Tell You. Something more here. Well this is. Just off. To piss off and it's got a beautiful blue flower and a strong Franklins smell doesn't say a lot of people make tea with it but it. Oh yes there is trouble yeah. Oh is it the bill would smell so good for the whole week and the whole planet actually. It is. Yes and the flowers are edible. But this is my favorite. Rob believes that the Corsican man and co. what it smells like. Just makes you cool on a hunting strongest man it's a carpet groundcover and although it's from courses that likes to grow in moist wet conditions and shade so you've got to give it the right conditions and it will be a happy ground cover. It's a kind of white hot by bike that's not a man with money and.

Now we move on to our next. Terrorist thing. We'll save the summer madness. Guard. All right anything go. Well this is our summer madness. Start where there are no rules and we can do pretty much anything we want to do anything goes here and this is my favorite ride. Of the Bo's'n hair. And that. Flow. And the thing about it that so beautiful are these working. Groups. They. Turned really into orange with bright red fruit. At the Plaza last night the flowers avoiding the foods go bode well they are back in the summer they come out and by late summer they're all bright on or off their list started. Yes there's a yellow one up there. And if you like you can get the money to. You. With the. Other great I don't. Want to have fun but I love the way you have made this stand. The Trellis. Inside a planter. Yeah and things off the whole way around and you know we did that to give a sense of privacy within each of these gardens where.

The patio. To. Those Hollows was yes a lot. Let me show you our medicinal aloe plant growing Can you show me where. It's right out here there and in a couple of weeks it'll be brilliant aren't there. Only. To crack it. There and or to it and it opens up it recurse up. Exposes these really. Red. Now this is the medicinal hollow. And I had a piece of meat. And this is a plant that very often people like to have on their window sill. Because if you do get a skin burn. You use the sap. To heal your skin. So if you get a cut or sunburn or something like that you just read that off again pending. It has tremendous this strong. Yeah. Good. I think a lot of them are native to South Africa. They're happy in my.

Blood. I think it's a very useful plan too. I have a little while although I write in the little steam right out of the. Container. Right. This container we've got the beautiful White Oleander. Oh we're doing our field while ours in it. And blooms in the hotter. The happier it is in it when we want to rejuvenate it we just put. Them right back at the base and we get all new growth. The secret is to be very severe for our food. Well we do it in winter. And we take this into the greenhouse and then we just take it right back to the. Base. When we caught

there we had the power to do that. Thank you. That's the ad that I've. Just been. Back. And then in front of it as. Well as. Garlic bread. And yet you'll have the pleasure of a garlic flavor on your followers. In the so this can be good. Tender plant. But it does very well and. It also does well in the dark and the highlight. Of. White Stripes. Is Tendou So they're into over it cold Exactly. Just pick it up and bring it in daylight. It's well worth its place. Hope to see how that.

Will bring the wealth and I think that that's better for many of the plants rather than using plastic or some other material. And they look. Very. Beautiful. And one of the things to notice in this combination is that we don't mix too many kinds of. Either clay or wooden pots and they're very similar because. If you have a container garden with many types of pots it looks John has always tried to use real restraint. Containers An awful. Lot of the. Way. All the way. That's right. That's right of China. Yes that holds it together. You just got this is one of the combinations. Which is the. Die. Which is not. Anything you would normally see. And we did this for fun. We decided we wanted to do something that was just different. This would withstand a very nice summer as our free trade would That's right and we wanted to show that that's one of the reasons we put it

together. Good finish it is full of soil and it's full of a more desert like soil. We use a lot of interest in the chicken breast which is sharp granite. We mix that it would actually not you know this has a false bottom. And only goes down to 18 inches deep there are a lot of practical considerations and in this case it's the weight of the container they test to have it does it has drainage all the way through and we have to water these once a day. And some of the plants we have which will see the hanging baskets we water twice a day. Yes I want to show you my favorite container garden which is the purple and yellow card. And we'll go over there and see that where it will just head over here. This is bronze I know one of those beautiful herbs because of this feathery foliage Juno I thought it was delicious or something a little bit

of a mess. But isn't it beautiful and you know growing beneath it in this purple and yellow garden is golden lemon balm for all that. Migraine. I have had or. Is wondering the moment I don't want to take. I mean add it to my birthday what I should add the feathery Bronze battle I will show you this by look at the fruits on this interesting vine of. The purple Hyacinth. Beans. And this plant grows down a lot of Jell-O Thomas Jefferson's garden and the flowers are edible. Here the purple flowers. Yes and the beans are like purple peas thing. Yeah and it's so ornamental. Yes it's good to eat or not well I've heard that but they really don't taste right. The old fashioned one said this is one of our favorite Salvias It's called Mexican salvia. And it has these flowers and it blew. On and on On and later for some are

not hearty So we take cuttings with summer. In the greenhouse and bring them back out again. And is this just a one year of growing years growth. A lot of the sages if they have a good hot season will put on a tree and then the other one the whole for a container. They are. Everything else. Now this is the purple Mallow and next to it is the golden sage which is one of the most beautiful foliage colors in a golden garden. Yeah. Would be that what a contrast. Look at this a black sweet potato vine it's called Black and it's got these dark leaves magnificent in a container a hanging basket or even as a ground cover all. Day. Long. I don't buy. That. Oh. And Juba got them from a rare plant

nursery that I've noticed they're just starting to become available but we've got ours up in the fall and we divide it like a potato and then grow it in larger numbers each year. So they keep over winter. They do. And then we have the beautiful purple Ark Salus over here which is one of the best of the foliage plants. And. I have noticed because of the way this garden has been behind it the purple looks better with gold because it's offset so we'll try this I've never seen it before but I think it's it's explosive. It really is. And. If you know. What. You are. In a container. Container. We do know for a number of years and then it will get found and we'll take it back down to the nursery modify it and go through the whole process to keep everything rejuvenated. Yes I'd love to show you some of our hanging baskets we've got a significant Rosemary to show you. I'd love to see it.

I'd love to show you how it looks in a hanging basket. This is our Blue Ball cement. And it was just you climbing down to the ground it was happiest and. I would never have expected that. Well there it is. Hanging baskets with soil in them. But keep in mind that these are water twice a day during the summer and we don't even count the rain. These are they drink a lot and they're beautiful but these would be a tremendous amount of work for a home. Are there. And so people come to the Botanic Garden to see to look at the beauty of it here. If they are prepared to do the extra little boy yes they can go away for the weekend and noticed this prostrate Rosemary this is three years old. And it's just one plant and it's like a sculpture the way wood hands do. Well we do we clean it out and prune out the center and we could prove this much harder if we didn't want to be this large. Oh I think it looks beautiful.

And and this same kind. Of rose is just as good for cooking as they get it really good. Good. Well that's what we do we fertilize these during the growing season once a week with a liquid fertiliser and then we also put a slow release fertilize them fertiliser in early spring when we're old before we bring them out of there there's a lot they get a lot of food that's why they're so big and the protocol you know they are for one little thing. It's love that goes see the children's garden haha. We saw our children this morning. Yeah this is their favorite stopping place. Oh great. He welcomes you to the children's garden. Do do the children actually love this film. Yes we invite children to come here we work with them in the workshops and they can enjoy the topiary we have and they can certainly help. Reap the harvest in the garden. Just because what kind of squash these are Turks turfing gourds.

And they'll be ready for harvest soon. And they just. Grow so vigorously on your display there is rewarding the children to watch. It's true. They really enjoy. Children's. Time. Yes. That's right short. Now. There are immediate results in this garden and that's what you need with kids. And we want to teach them something about the environment and so we put in a bowl of garden. There are a lot of reasons for this because the bar has a unique environment and it's a delicate environment. And also because we can grow Venus flytrap. Funny thing is they are done because they moved and the children always remember the little flower the catch is that it's this and they always remember it I can show them in some of these others like the pitcher plant. I can show them the insects that get caught in the hairs and then fold down into the plant. Their imaginations. Must.

Love it. That's another kind of pitcher plant. The southeastern part of. North America. And a lot of these are rare and endangered plants. And they're growing in a box. That's what we recreated no followers. Protest. Exactly. Yes and this is the tail. That's right. Children go for walks to look for. They will they will. Water They are the pitcher plants actually hold the water in them. But. These are other kinds of plants that you were growing apart and they're plants that grow in this very. Environment it probably has a pH of about four. Very low. And these these are the same thing. While. They are there Bob wildflowers and of course no children's

garden would be complete. Without our sensitive plant. That's so tough to call him. And you know I grew up. And that's what the children like something that acts and react to this and they always remember that it closes up the cat with them. Because I remember that the ropes. And you know that's right little. Yes. Beautiful. Yeah. What's this. This is our unicorn flower or unicorn plant. No season Artemia. Look at these photos. Have you ever say you know you might want to do. What you know as they mature they turn into what looks like a bird. And so you can use the nice sculpture they could use the Christmas tree decorated last race etc.. Yeah. We found that there are so many plants we want to grow and grow that will capture people's interest and imagination. And. So we want to expand to have a. Prominent children's garden for all the little time we would like to do.

This is the town. This is the terrace of the U.S. Botanic Garden and these are all changing displays every year we come up with new ideas. Everything is possible so it's easy to change. That's right. And if it's planted every spring. In April May and it's taken down every autumn and. October November. And. Then. To go into. The. Garden we'll go in and we will probably take the plants out and read them and use them in some other permanent exhibit so they'll be used do you get everything here into the recycling of all of our plants. At because you have to have greenhouses to make sure we have a lot of greenhouses in which we produce all of these plants and. We have lots of topiaries we have a show coming up called Circus Circus Circus and so we're going to have a great time creating new topiaries. Oh and I have noticed that the adults like children. Is just as much as the children do.

You know the central place for people who get to be there at the base of their little fish. Exhibit is exactly. True I believe that it's a visit. But more people you know of all this talk to.
