It. Welcome to this week's road in real streams. Boy I'll tell you as you look out there you'd swear that we're only going around the mountains of believing we're in the center of New Jersey only about 25 miles from New York City. It's the middle of February. I'll tell you I got cabin fever. I want to go fishing and when I just met a guy named Peter Hosking he says come on down we've got some great trout fishing come on in here feet. Tell us a little bit more about this great trout fishing that you promised me. Well move this is around well and hopefully today we're going to get some nice browns and some like try to feel lucky. Well you know the thing that amazes me is there's nobody out on the water we get it all the ourself is just that much of a kept secret. It's a pretty good secret we have. We had a lot of pressure in the summer time but right now we have it all to ourselves so let's get some fish. All right that's great will stay with us. We should catch some fish and do something to break that cabin fever. You.
Live. I'll tell you this is a little bit different than efficient and I'm used to and that's why I need guys like Pete to help me out. You know they've got the techniques for these areas but it's nice when you have somebody that's willing to pass on that information. I'm a little bit stubborn because Pete says he uses real ultralight Maung down my garage but I want to bring my Ultra Lights today and use those because I want to show you all that we can use the same tackling techniques basically we use in a lot of other areas for a lot of different kinds of fishing. Now Pete tell us you said that this is a peak time right now right. Right this time of year we have excellent lake trout fishing down deep. Contrary to what you
think with the cold water we're still going to be fishing for lake trout down there is anywhere from 90 feet down to 115. Later on after the brown trout have been freed they were going to move into the shoreline and will be fishing anywhere from 15 to 20 feet of water with no downers just let the line up behind the boat hopefully will be catching some nice little tiny plugs. We want to show you both of those things. And don't abandon me right now just because we're going to try down I guess we're going to try a few things that you might not have tried before down I guess I'm going to try some minnows right we're going to try some shiners that technique when the water is this cold seems to work really well for lake trout. Oh I hope as we go along you can tell us a little bit more about fishing in New Jersey you know. In one of the things that I've always wanted to say about stream side about my my ideas of fishing you know I get letters from you folks and you say Geez I wish I could catch one of those big fish or something. So do I. But anyway the most important thing is you have to take advantage of what you have near you. And there's just millions of people that live right now serious so we want to show you some of the things that are right out there in your
own backyard. So what do you say without further ado we get go one and get out there and see if we get our first liker. OK. No it was official. Here is your take
on them. Right. There. First. You're going to have to explain to everybody. What you got. There because. My brother just made a. Little there but it's a fish for February. So here. I want everybody fish to get it or heard of anyone. That's OK. You know what I might want to mention at this time.
We don't kill any. We practice catch and release here. Surface noise. The only thing is if. There are. Little chartreuse here last spring and he's already done a little bit of growing out of here to tell the. Story. I tell you what I want you to do right now while we're
talking. Everybody. Writes effect. Let's explain it. I don't have a big boat or anything. And you can apply to fish in the winter if you want to get there. It's a factor for fishing smaller fish. Down there just like any other. Regular. Right.
We had to fish on there we missed the first we had to fish on their. Organization. Was telling me that there's more like this like than anything else. As a matter of fact it appeared like the bottom was just covered with fish. You know even though you might not
have a big boat and you don't have to get these expensive down records but they do have portable down wreckers designed for canoe and little car top boat that wouldn't get down on the bottom of the reservoir. And that's where Lake Trout are most of the time and that's how you're going to catch a. Fish. I have. To get a double right about now would that. Right. Here. Do the fish all tend to be the same size when you get into the 15 inch size to show it's a hard time to catch.
Now you may also wonder why the only fish we're catching are on these back rides well. On the way up the case the Browns want to hear but tells me this time of the day the real food they feed on hearing that's basically all they want but that wind is really picking up. Does it feel like it's got any size that our little bitty one. It's not a field. Now maybe you'll start to understand all you people out there that wonder why you said it. You trim the sport to whatever is available. To catch one of the five foot dial Rod I got over the corner and wait for wonder. If it hits on it but they seem to get. That when it's. A little. Visit. Beautiful next now that's a keeper. That is a keeper. They've got to be 24 inches.
OK. Another nice little leg. Now. Let's make sure he. Makes it right. OK. So this cold temperature seems to help bring him to a temperature change like this. You know. Which direction you want to go in here. You know a lot of people use down wreckers. But what most people don't do is they don't try using live bait with down wreckers and I've talked to folks out like Ontario that say this is a real sleeper method of catching fish. So we wanted to show you this today. We wanted to show you method of Reiki and show you that they will catch fish. You know I don't want to hear.
And I think. You're right. We were going to go. There. For other types of fishing because you could take the same that we're doing here. And don't rigors. Your other favorite like.
This is one thing I have to admit that I'm not nuts about down river fishing is it. Obviously we have to keep the boat in gear because we got other life. Kind of like just. Trying to rig and you can see. Right. Here this is lighting trouble. For the size of the show. They can see what they look like. I feel bad about that. I want to apologize to all year for dropping their fish. I'm not going to do it as much this year. So you can see.
The size of the trainers. Here. Here they're. In the water. The water like it doesn't.
Like I'm running straight through the water in the. Next unless it's a big lake or. Because what we're going to do here is we're going to go around. If we did it right now would be waste no time during the day. This water someplace in the hearing and they won't hit anything. And then in the afternoon toward the shore waiting for that magic time because. We're not going to go right to the ground.
You know one of the things that is amaze me all day to day is that I just can't get over how really peaceful and scenic it is here at this reservoir. You know I think folks don't realize that there are some awful good fishing in New Jersey not only for trial but there are some doggone good ponds for bass. Try looking closer to home and you might find some great fishing right your backyard. OK we going on here. Really. Don't. See. The next fish. Will be a problem. When we're done here. Literally. Right in the shoreline here. I wanted to get to a different type of fish and show you. The end were flatlining directly. 150. Feet behind the bow. And you can see it is windy.
Days right around. The sun with. This. Telling the salt. Water. Yeah. It's oil boy I can't believe. I just can't believe this is just a freak X is there anyone here. Who decided this is a sign of. Something here. Little. More. Children. This is. Great or to the side. Like. Take over there. Yeah right. There you go. On a 14 or 15 inches around. Here. No one here they have to be 13 inches for the brown squad leader. This is a really a skinny one for will be catching hopefully a
little later on this is about the smallest hope we will see as far as a brown truck really goes. Down from the bottom. Is he going to get some got to do what he did on his way. Down. We got to watch out of everybody what we're doing now. We're just letting the wind out about 150 feet behind him. Will. That give back. You're going to get him when he jumps up there to grab. Boards because. By going to. That's
right I was just explaining. Back to your question. Well that's great. Down here. You get started. Now when you got to the. Heart tells me that I.
Write. Too much. We were taking a break. Taking a break from the wind for. The biggest overhead. Normally the rounds disappear.
There's always. Something anyway. To be. Far from the course. Brown trout. Difficult Child to catch. The reason for that is that they're very very spooky. That's why planar boards have become so popular in the bigger bodies of water they enable you to get along the shoreline where the fish are without sparking. We didn't have a plainer voice today so we had to do this troll way way behind the boat as far as we could. As they got rougher we had to turn the speed of the motor off and this created more noise and we had this suspicion that maybe this was affecting our catch. The rougher the fewer fish we caught.
Pretty good they don't like it. Because. It's such a violent change in the weather over the last hour. Winds up to 30 more. Broadly. With. Other. Right. Wing radio. Sunday over here on the right. Ok you look real close to the trout association
number tells me that we saw this just this past 11 inches you can see he's probably close to 16 inches in about five inches or grown in a period of about 10 months. Oh yeah ritual Taggart Brown nice fat belly on to me. It's amazing you expect this from. You know one of our bodies of water of New York not cut down New Jersey but you know like a figure like Lake Ontario you know nice That's what always surprises me. Let's get in let's get back to their water after. I think it's about time we said good. Night. This that I wanted to make you know truly. Fascinating to me. To visit new places to come to some place that everybody. Leaves to come up our way to fish great fishing here a Fish Lake Ontario and I only know what
they have here in your backyard in the summer that the vultures. Really secure. There really is. It does receive a lot of pressure but this time of year. A lot of people out here with basically the same snowmobiling we just came out here and you can enjoy it. Oh yeah it's great. Much as we can teach him in the short period of time that we have to do the show. If you. Think of. One thing that you would like to pass on and then I'm going to do the same then we're going to buy. For my fishing today that you think it's a lesson that people could have learned from this. The number one time here is that me her sister can count on coming out and catching fish right away. I really have to take the time to learn can come you know bang bang bang you're going to get all the fish you want you got to take time to learn to go listen the people who know what. I would say is the best thing. Take your time.
Thanks for coming back again right here next week. All right.
