From Lucerne Switzerland on the 3rd of September in 1862 Klara Shu Mon the wife of the famous composer wrote these words to Brahms. I hardly know how to tell you calmly what a joy your quintet is to me. My heart is full of it. Your music seems to grow more and more glorious. The work is a masterpiece. The piano quintet is in four movements the first allegro and the second andante poco adagio the third skirt so with the trio and the fourth finale Boco Sawston Hutto Allegro non troppo and presto. Piano Quintet in F minor Opus 34 by Johana smocks performed for us by the people quartet and pianist Robert Freeman. The Cavan Quartet made its debut at the Marlborough music festival in 1969 and soon was recognized as one of the great string quartets of our time. In addition to regular performances in the world's major concert halls past seasons have been highlighted by 15 complete Beethoven cycles and a presidential inaugural concert at the White House. The subject of many radio and TV programs the Cleveland quartet have been seen on The Today Show. And where the first classical artists ever invited to perform on the national Grammy Awards telecast. In addition to regular tours of the United States Canada Western Europe and Japan they've also been heard in South America Australia New Zealand Turkey and Israel. And Robert Freeman third director of the Eastman School of Music where he is also professor of
musicology was appointed to that position in 1972. He studied piano with Gregory Tucker. Arthur balsam and Rudolph Circa. As a chamber musician Robert Freeman has performed all over the United States and Europe. And has collaborated with many of faculty colleagues and Colborne recitals and in the Eastman Botsford concerts at Alice Tully Hall in New York City. The Cuban quartets has recently recorded the Brahms piano quintet with the American pianist Emanuel Ax and this recording will be released by RCA Records during the 1903 season. Today's concert by the Cavan quartet is being performed on four of the greatest string instruments ever made. Niccolo Paganini zone Stradivarius has these four priceless instruments two violins of the and cello are a from the collection of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington and are currently on loan to the Cleveland quartet. In the more than 350 years since Antonio Stradivari created these instruments
they've had an extraordinary history. The second violin dating from 69000 to the first from 1724 and the viola from 1731 the cello bear Stradivarius inscription made in my Ninety third year 1736 one year before the great violin maker died. In the 19th century of the four instruments were acquired by the legendary violin virtuoso Niccolo Paganini. So thrilled was he by the tone quality of the first violin that he declared. This violin has a tone as big as a double bass never will I part with it as long as I live. And he never did it or audience here at Kilburn Hall has obviously been thrilled by the tonal luster of these instruments and by the expertise of the musicians and the next work will give further evidence of the unique sonorities of the Cleveland quartet in concert from Kilburn will continue in a moment.
