Description
Description
The first part of an interview with Ruby Bridges conducted for Louisiana: A History. As a first grader, Bridges became the first African American student to enroll in William J. Frantz Elementary School after District Court Judge J. Skelly Wright ordered the desegregation of the New Orleans Public Schools in 1960. Her experience inspired the Norman Rockwell painting, \0xFFFDThe Problem We All Live With.\0xFFFD Bridges discusses arriving at school on her first day under the protection of federal marshals; the large crowd of angry white parents outside the school shouting at her; searching for other students in the school because she did not realize that the white parents had moved their children to other schools; the discrimination faced by her family members because of her integrating the school; concerns that she would be poisoned; being the only student in her class for the entire year; and her special relationship with her white teacher.
