Description
The first part of an interview with Dr. Carl Wooten and Dr. Marcia Gaudet of the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) conducted for Ernest J. Gaines: Louisiana Stories. Wooten and Gaudet co-authored the book Porch Talk with Ernest Gaines: Conversations on the Writer\0xFFFDs Craft in 1990. They discuss the narrative voice of Gaines and its role as the voice of memory of black culture from slavery and segregation; how Gaines became a creative writing professor at the University of Southwestern Louisiana; his teaching methods and role as a mentor to his students; Gaines\0xFFFD influences from literature and jazz music; and the effect of both Louisiana culture and Gaines\0xFFFD California education on his work.
