Description
An interview with Almenia Freeman Warren conducted for Baton Rouge\0xFFFDs Troubled Waters. Warren was inducted into the Louisiana High School Sports Hall of Fame for her performance as a swimming coach at Baton Rouge High School, where she won three state championships. She discusses the importance of the Brooks Park swimming pool to the African American community during segregation because it provided a safe place to swim; learning to swim and using the showers at the Brooks Park pool; testing Civil Rights laws as a teenager through lunch counter sit-ins; studying health and physical education at Southern University and participating in the May water shows; her career as an educator and high school swimming coach; the desegregation of the public schools in East Baton Rouge Parish; and the improvement in race relations.
