Description
The second part of an interview with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ernest J. Gaines filmed in San Francisco for Ernest J. Gaines: Louisiana Stories. Gaines discusses his novel A Lesson Before Dying and the theme of a person knowing exactly when they are going to die; his view on the death penalty; deciding first to write about themes instead of time periods; the importance of his agent in guiding the path that his career has taken, as well as providing encouragement and criticism of his work; the effect of the success of The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman on his life; and feeling compelled to write certain works in order to deal with themes that he wants to explore.
