Reed is a film critic, who has worked for several magazines and newspapers, including Vogue, the New York Times, and the New York Observer. He discusses: his familys constant moves during his childhood; coping with the moves through the world of film; his friendships with various Southern authors, including Truman Capote and Tennessee Williams; experiencing his first success as a writer by interviewing Buster Keaton and Jean-Paul Belmondo at the Venice Film Festival; and his involvement in the aftermath of the shooting of John Lennon at the Dakota Building in New York.
