- This episode of the series "Louisiana Legends" from August 31, 2010, features an interview with Buddy Roemer conducted by Beth Courtney. Roemer, a native of Shreveport, served in the United States House of Representatives from 1981-1988 and as the Governor of Louisiana from 1988-1992. He discusses: growing up on a farm in north Louisiana in the 1950s; his love of reading as a child; his studies at Harvard University; his father Charles Roemer II's role as the Commissioner of Administration under Governor Edwin Edwards; his first elected position as a delegate to the 1973 Louisiana Constitutional Convention; running for Congress; his successful run for governor in 1987; his record on the environment; losing the 1991 gubernatorial election to Edwin Edwards and David Duke; his role as a Kennedy Fellow at Harvard University; his success in banking; and his family.
- Description
- Charles "Buddy" Roemer served in Congress from 1981-87 before being elected as Governor in 1987 and serving from 1988-1992. While in office, Roemer increased teacher pay, strengthened the Department of Environmental Quality to enforce environmental laws, and toughened the laws on campaign finance. He is the only governor in Louisiana history to change party affiliations while in office, switching from a Democrat to a Republican in 1991
