Episode Description
This episode of the series "Gumbo Island" from October 14, 1996, features host Britt Henderson traveling around the state to learn more about Louisianas Native American tribes. She first visits the Poverty Point State Historic Site in Epps, Louisiana, where she meets with Dennis Labat, the park manager. He shows her how the people of the Poverty Point culture prepared food, as well as examples of their tools and earthworks. Britt also travels to Charenton, Louisiana, and meets with Zack LeBlanc, a student at the Chitimacha Day School. Zack gives Britt a tour of his tribal school, introduces her to his grandmother, and shows her the costume he wears during tribal dances.
Description
Children visit the Chitimacha Nation of Charenton and archeological finds at Poverty Point State Commemorative Area in Epps. A Chitimacha boy shows Britt his tribal school. They talk with his grandmother about "the old days." He shows Britt his Chitimacha "regalia," the costume he wears during important tribal dances. At Epps, children learn that an ancient Louisiana people built a large ceremonial mound shaped like a bird, and they learn how the early Indians cooked their meals. The music video teaches children the names and locations of Louisiana's federally-recognized Indian tribes.
