Crafts. For the other. Hello Folks this is where it all happens and it's quite appropriate because most of my show is on film about film. Let's watch
for a. Very good movie soft music. So. Soft. Sweet. Popcorn Coke. When you're always surrounded by noise gregarious people. And a good story. The movie doesn't always stay home. It's not. To. Say. What they would do. Oh yeah. Sex and Violence is a long way away
from. 3000 miles away. Doesn't spoil a picnic. Or. A.
You
might not be quite your cup of tea. But Newville Vadi you'll like a nice slice of lunch pitching well pretty pictures. I like to them on all fronts. You don't have to look gorgeous in Zurich. It may be. Too small for a.
40 year. Old. To see for you. Hello.
Nice day. I just want yeah. Yes. A little hot today. I live right over there. What are you doing. Let me help you out here. Oh.
My. You know I used to work in a construction company to pick time. To. Get up now. Stuff I. Just. Show. Up. Here. Well. Thank. You. Right. By. Who is
the you can go. Very very sweet. Then what about the new underground the underground movies. You can't take popcorn to them at a picnic on the go move is a nasty a war an assault on a target when you don't really protest things that are going on at the moment. The underground movie seems to be the most powerful and it's paralyzing the fight that it's
unpleasant mitigating and I'm pleasant if you want to see a real it's like a society look at an underground movie like this one 12 12:42. OK maybe Sarner see one take three Safary. I was born in 1942 12 12:42 in the Bronx. I was born during World War Two. I don't know anything about World War. Do. You remember my childhood back to when I was about. To. Be 30 years and
fight jeopardy. I mean to have you but you have to die in French and Japanese friends. I don't want to talk about it. Sometimes I can remember it took my little drama. I want to march down the street in the Bronx. Screaming and yelling at the top of my lungs in my children my daddy is coming home my daddy is coming home. And every time my mother tells me this you know my ear my wife died. You know there were tears. I remember dangling I'm in my crib. I was wearing yellow pajamas the color of your feet. I had everything. And it was late at night I know that I went home. So my father just a picture this isn't working that come to the door and he's kind of looking at me with a big smile on his face. And I know that day and I knew him.
I knew him and I'll never forget. I'll never forget this as long as. My father loves to come home and to sit down and read the papers and watch tv and sleep. I was always close to my mother being a very rich man. Everybody had a TV set. I read the headlines and that's it. Doris what are you. There are. Three or four times a day now. You know you have to give it all up. You can have your cake and eat it too. And I disagree completely. I've been meeting the right people right. I know that behind every successful business is a woman. You know Doggy Dog I go with the goose is good for the gander. Mommy keeps calling and when I
try my momma every Friday night a piece of merchandise. Born so that's so but I accept reality. But I don't like it don't. Live don't life around. Because if you don't go to mom every Friday night I haven't picked up a baby or anything. I still like eggs. I want my daddy to make sure. I know what's going on. And I realize and it hurts me because I love the country. It really hurts me. I look forward to it. I wanted to take a dramatic day. I hope people getting stabbed knife shot everything all over the place. I just don't get to read about because if I may read it that. I've come to think about. It. I could believe in a lot of things very strongly. But you know you can be a non-conformist but there are certain ways you must conform to society. Right.
I'll tell you I went to George Washington High School and George Washington High School was like a United Nations school was one third negro. The other third was mixed. I like to experience everything of live. In. Here. Something if you were a teacher that left a lasting impression on me because you keep me up to every day. To me. If I turn my head turned around to look at the boy behind. Me. And he kept me after class constantly and you know what we would do after class. So many so I mean my. Friend. Who would chitchat about my plans for the weekend about the fellows I've been dating. But. I think he likes me. So he
has a super ego. Right. I pray. To God. There are so many things to do. Funny thing is to. I like to do some things some of them I like. To. Go. There. I like to read and I like to take a listen to poetry. I like to get the content. I like the I like just as much a good bargain. Success to me is when you have something to give to somebody to be able to give to somebody no matter what it is to give from yourself to someone else to get on the stage and say something funny and make somebody laugh.
To. Life. Is just to say something very very sad and to make somebody already feel. Not long ago I received a letter. She spoke of the pain. And the loss and the terror. That are ever ready to flow. I feel a soldier. You take serious life too mysterious. I told my. Through. Her words of encouragement from me. From this lady. You know last year when we tried to take God gave her my light so we ask God to bless you and your family. And I'd like to at least had a
county to. Review a new project. Can go. For following this principle. I think the Communist can just walk right in. Is a consensus among the groups in the nation because they just can go boom. How far are you. I. Think we can hold them. To me the worst thing anybody can do is to take it upon themselves to take their life or anybody else. You know I'm one man who can do. The math there. We will get. That. I lived under Truman Eisenhower Kennedy and Johnson. Of course our president I greatly admire.
He is our president. I give him due respect. Because he is. Given the opportunity. I feel everyone. For years. We. Will pursue this. I'm not talking about self-defense but my deliberate cold blooded unadulterated my. Countrymen. Those words are to be found in the greatness of this nation. All the strength of expression. There is a little flower upon a tin can you. Know. There's. A blade of grass now but the trees are even my eyes fixed upon it. What is it
doing there. The earth is cold. The sky is dark the clouds are all to. No. One. No light now. No not one. I hear a crash of thunder that a fire across the sky it pours and pours to half of me. Please don't bend and die. Down there because I cannot move my head back to the ground. There is no sound. I can gaze upon the pink and yellow flower sitting next to me. I think it may symbolize the Strand for yet again it may seem like one where over 40.
Something over four years that we're completely against it doesn't matter what these forces do to it. If it were true. That there is always a good old of either or no matter what is against you. If two people love each other whereas maybe the pink and yellow get two colors made like a man if you. Do. Not get to love. And the wind will blow him heavily. Try to shake the pedals of the flower. The sky will be so dark and the rain will come down heavily and try to crush the petals to the ground and you turn around. You don't look for it because you you're afraid. Ken who made that film. Still declaring Daisy and done. They are people who work normally in commercial cinema and making TV commercials.
And this was made in their last hours at the studio when there was no work. They snuck in this film very angry movie it's a very witty movie too. How typical do you think it is that you know the whole underground movie scene. Is it typical. No it is not a in that way it's a kind of hybrid. It's a it's something showing what's happening between commercial cinema or people who are involved in commercial cinema with an awareness of what's happening in the underground. The film becomes an underground film by people who have not been part of the underground but they know that it's being released and shown on the ground and does because the underground is created an audience that's going to film. This film which is made in the slickened sort of like commercial way or like a commercial in some ways incorporating commercials. There has been a tendency throughout history
for the established commercial film to borrow from what the independent or avant garde film has done. And this is recently happening in a very obvious way in story films Hollywood films and particularly in continental films where there's suddenly there are things like the camera being moved around a lot. And there were a sudden flashes of very fast editing which didn't exist four or five years ago until they had gained some if not popularity least circulation through the avant garde and television commercials in the last five or six years have become more and more flashy and pyrotechnical in these ways. So. The commercials you know not only
the commercial but the commercials themselves have already become technically like this film. Many of them I think this film differs in its concerns much more than just its its techniques. This is a social film really. It couldn't have been it couldn't happen in a society which was involved in Vietnam and so I think it's only a social thing you. Know with the presenter. Would you tell us please what you think of the underground film. Well it's not easy to express in a few words. Some very good points too I suppose but not as bad as what I've seen on the three. I've seen the Tennessee girls and the war thing that he showed me also just right which is a very amusing paper. It is called No wife in the wild. Nobody is going to be played
by a model bad role model. You know we brought to my office six foot right not negro my vote couldn't go on. What about Chelsea girls as good as any of them. Red is on the ground with no real Bhag anything that is new and experimental is beneficial for everybody. You get Romney really an a movie maker like my American life. All right. So I think this goes too far in my opinion. I've never I'm not a big I don't criticize. Well I don't go along with them but I think you know Americans have the right to film. I can't say that any of these movies in my opinion what I've heard of some of them songs they me.
But that's only what I read in the news. Thank you very much Mike. Has to set up their feelings about the. Other night. Yes.
Well there goes also know we've got something really original from them. I mean would you take your home movie camera move into the bathroom and take a picture of two men two twins one dressed one undressed both fondling dogs. You would. And in front of the New York Cinematheque. And this is what he came up with this film from 11 minutes to five minutes. But I don't think the plot suffers. Let's see it then please. Oh. Oh.
Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh oh. My god. And. My. Mom. I'm not a little bit
worried. I I hope I had. A. Problem. Oh my no. No. No. The problem. With It. Good luck. With that money and a good plan to deal with an act of violence. When you look at. What the family in Ireland. Could go over to have another one. But I'm only guessing and given the fact that the door had more than a little while
to dump on mother waiting in the hallway. The running. Back. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Now. I've got it. Greg Whoa whoa whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa whoa whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa whoa whoa whoa. Whoa. Whoa.
Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa. Whoa whoa whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa whoa whoa whoa. Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. I. Think this is like a very. Conclusively open
ended film. I mean I really don't think that one can possibly insist on any meaning and. You know like I don't think you could really think that the film maker had something like that and just maybe it's proved to the world that the next take baths that look like the did they they all look like beatniks the bathers. George and my crush are twins 15 seconds apart. Yes look alike. Not like they look like and they are terrific and they can say anything I guess. And they've been making films about the age of 13 by 2010 and they made me three or four dozen films. I don't care. It's like there's a scene by the way. I said what was this. But it just wasn't working what a time I thought it was like you know selecting compositions and own space arrangements with a zoom lens and
moving the camera. But they weren't ready. No only occasionally that I would have something for me to look at. I thought that was just. You know just not taking shape you know. You know however. He apparently is going to have to show a representative of his work if the filmmakers and ignoring it is also a very productive and there are lots and lots of movies. And as you can tell from the saying it's joined now by Warhol ethmoids now by war. Now didn't you have an idea a beginning of something you wanted to get over. So he's done it. You what are the succession with the pseudo priest. And that was very funny. Great movies comedy to do.
Who's going to. Win. When you decided to turn from show it to too soon to look me make this decision. We've got to tell me who is in the 30s and we are going to California and I'm part of time. That sounds good. Could you take a look at the films. I don't need to hear what you call yourself a director because just that people fly you should direct the movie. So what do you do. What is different. We're also very expensive to make this film. And so far none. We just found out that we use tape
magnetic tape and we found out that we can sign that with these live pictures here and it's like magic Rhodri I shouldn't be too critical of a person that went to the fields and just said rubbish troit lonesome spring etc.. So that's where we come on. You really do want to move on. Are you interested in making of move conventional technology. Oh yes. So we're going to do right now it's more conventional. You can continue with your work that is not true which is can do conventions with lots of plots. What kind of beachfront a full time movie which was what was
in the movie. This is a look at what all the kids are doing nowadays. Do you think the majority of underground films are bad. No I'm one of them. They're all good. Because. You know I think any camera that takes a picture comes out of the picture itself is anything. Yes. Did you when you were in London. Did you did you see in the English films are they doing it. So one made in Shea Stadium was the Beatles. Is was beautiful. What sort of thing do you do. Oh snap snap snap something pulls it out.
No. Told them all no. Don't make a b b b b b. B b b b b b b b b b. B b b b b b b b b b.
I gotta do it. When they don't need to do it really well you don't have to be big enough you can make the movie. God made me play the part that your films also lyrically.
That's not a contradiction. The next film by the head of New York Cinematheque Jonas Meekins. It's about a psychedelic farm in Millbrook. But for the soundtrack the first voice you hear is that of a friend a federal narcotics agent and let's watch it Brooke. OK. No. All right. OK now in your own words how you know what led up to the. Arrest. Where did it all began. Did you get report or. Well it began when Timothy Leary. First came to the Diedrich estate. We really became alarmed because of. His background and what had transpired take him around Mexico and his and his trouble at Harvard. So we. Set up. A surveillance.
Spasmodic. And then we gradually increased it activity increased. And we continue to do so. And our suspicions of course were increasing. As time went by. What sort of people are they. Well it wasn't necessarily sort of paper. But then again it was but it was the traffic which was not normal. There were more people more people going there than we thought was normal and. Across three people in the general area were alarmed about this too. They didn't approve of space being especially I didn't approve of Timothy Leary because of his background. He advocated.
A. How many people out there understand there were something like 30 people thirty three adults and 10 children. Evidently you had some inside information there or at least something that you did. Well I can't say what our investigative
aides were to what we went through but we did have surveillance and as I say we increased our surveillance and it became a close surveillance and it came a time when we thought we should move on and that's when we moved on that early morning. You know it's obvious that you know you're not dealing with criminal types. I feel that. The people who are involved there maybe not all but some of them were. Deeply involved in the criminal type as far as I'm concerned. I'm very much opposed to it and I am rather outraged by the goings on at this place and especially the things that have been advocated by Timothy Leary and the things that he's done in the past. Did you talk about you know special surveillance methods you use anything anything
special methods only the extent of my surveillance I can't go into. But we did do so because we're so close at the end that we were. Very close to the. Yes yes yes yes. Dr. Larry claims that. This is for religious purposes you. Were there any evidence as being no religious evidence to me of religion that right rear ended things that. We might see an Oriental nature. But nothing that indicated to me that there was any religion connected at all. It's just. Surreal. Yes absolutely. This is this is my opinion and I. Am not going to change it unless something drastic
causes me to say that there a very I think severe tensions in that film between the documentaries and the hallways. It's a it's a very strange film. I'm not sure that's what I mean right now but. There really are some problems there. But I it's it certainly is. A nice film. It's certainly on one level it's an evocation of a broken off. Jonas Max. Took it to. Stand for the most vulnerable place it can be it is our subconscious. The next film for me isn't on the screen at all it's inside my skull. Cut it down from half an hour to ten minutes and you're going to see those 10 minutes with an insane transvestite singing a nice little song you listen to it. It gets right. The film. To.
For. The.
Summer who. Shot the path him it could happen to you if a person is assassinated because of a rational course of history. Has it gotten any. The president says you can't be in a hurry to see. Him
as. Him as. A a minor a a thing like a discovery of some way the assassination has to be explained as other historical events some fairly high stakes. And there is no holes for the rest of the world on hold. And so with the great number of things that ordinarily explained by the normal processes of history up to this point just because you don't fight with the United States we expect it always to be victorious and all we accomplish
so far this year. My suspicion is we're seeing a crossroads everywhere and we were likely to win. As soon as a do. You see you in
a. You. Don't. Know. You know I'm. A mother. I don't to hunger. For
Winther so. Psychotic. Food. Tremendously extreme and tense but. It's. Fake to me I cannot ask the question that is also so a six don't think doing six Vieuxtemps. It's a it's very witty. Again. It's also very heroic efforts. You know it's brilliance. Jack's performance is brilliant and. Very creative. Very harrowing. He's extending himself. He's getting himself. Very much against the flow and structure of society despite everything. And the film was made
in the very early 60s in 60 and 61 completed with John McCain's health money and 62. So it was sort of before they became like a whole genre. Of similar. Films especially for. The same time this came out Jack Smith who was with Blunk hope in the film. Gave the world plenty features. You know. A great. Many friends residing in various jail cells around the country. Right. And what what's your reaction to this. Well it's. Probably the only real. Biography. Anywhere in.
Cinema that I can think of off hand because it is I mean it's an essential biography or it's also a tragedy but I can't think offhand of another film that deals with the entirety of somebody's life which in which this film really does and the entirety really of a real person's character and what level is this is this. Delineation of character. Well by allusion mainly you know not by not by detail this description or by definition but by all the times by something quite simple but always by some kind of very intense image whether whether it be visual or just a sound and
you've just seen a program on the grammar of his underground movies. First of all dirty but we call it that because it's a TV. So instead it's like a strike of the beat up beat up there are a social context and. Absolutely indescribable. They're. Pretty good movies. They still very. Don't take me too serious. I just go. Oh I better. Do.
Ladies and gentlemen you have 15 minutes to relax and refresh yourselves at our convenient refreshment area restrooms we found immediately to the left of the hot dog stand. Public telephones are located behind the building. Thank you for compromising. I've been away from the microphone
