Description
Episode Description
A new personality complicates the lives of the Forsytes this episode. Soames Forsyte, his marriage to Irene a complete failure, nevertheless is determined to please his wife, and considers building a new home for her. At this point, Philip Bosinney, a talented but virtually penniless young architect, enters the picture. Bosinney is courting Soames' niece, June. The two become engaged but are forbidden to marry until Bosinney is earning at least 400 pounds a year, a condition that appears to be a long way from fulfillment. It is at the engagement part that Bosinney and Irene meet for the first time, setting the stage for an impending tragedy. In the filler for this episode NET President James Day interviews Eric Porter, who plays the role of Soames Forsyte in the series. Porter was known in England for a number of important roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company before attaining wider fame as the result of his part in the "Saga." He has also appeared in a few films including "The Pumpkin Eater" and "The Fall of the Roman Empire." In this interview Porter and Day discuss the way in which audiences in England and elsewhere responded to Porter's portrayal of the complex character of Soames Forsyte.
