[beeping] [Evelyn Murphy] --than have been done before. And I must say, Governor, as I start my political calls, I'm doing it with my second banana, bah! That this is the time to do it on behalf of Massachusetts, federally. [Dukakis] It sounded pretty good, didn't it? [Laughter] [Reporter] She will have the same political mission and federal state relations that Dukakis assigned earlier to his lieutenant governors, Tom O'Neill, son of the House speaker, and John Kerry on his way to the U.S. Senate. [Dukakis] I do think the federal-state relations assignment is one that's a natural for lieutenant governors generally and especially for this lieutenant governor. She's terrific in Washington, she understands policy, she's got as broad an understanding of the challenges that lie ahead for this state, for this country, as anybody I know. And it also will give an opportunity to get into some policy areas like education.
[Reporter] --back and place blame. For the next three weeks the Reagan team will be campaigning hard to keep Republican control of the Senate while watching the polls to make sure that the Gorbachev PR blitz doesn't undermine support at home. Support for the White House drive to sell the Strategic Defense Initiative. At the same time the administration will press the Soviets in Geneva to find out what can be kept alive from the almost-agreements of Iceland.
