[Reporter] William Kennefick and William Dunn, the two officers who've been fingered by the man who was the source of the allegations. Detective Richard Armstead has already testified that he was told of the incident by Area B, that is Roxbury police commander William Celester. But today the officers denied anything ever happened. [Dowd] Nobody here ever took the Fifth. Everybody came in, gave everything they knew about the situation, and that's the way it's been this past four years. [Reporter] Answered all the questions? [Dowd] I've been with this case for four years. I've lived with it, we've been cleared three times, how it ended up here I have no idea. [Reporter] Dunn and Kennefick both declined to talk on camera, but off camera Dunn expressed his anger and frustration with this, the fifth investigation. He pointed to his exemplary record, his much decorated career, and as extraordinary number of arrests. He bitterly complains that his parents died with the accusations against him still hanging. And William Kennefick, who suffers from a fatal heart condition, testified against medical advice today, according to his lawyer.
[Dowd] Regardless of what it took, he came here today to protect his name and his family. [Reporter] Attorney Peter Dowd says the U.S. attorney's office has called in everybody who has any information on the case. But as the 10 O'Clock News reported two weeks ago, two police officers say that Detective Jose Garcia told them he was an eyewitness to the alleged crime that officially he has denied ever seeing. Both our sources say they fear reprisals. [Source 1] I remember he said that he kept her out of there at gunpoint. Away from the other officers. It seems like he rescued the girl the same night he came to us. [Reporter] Another witness testifying today was Reverend Bruce Wall, who was subpoenaed after appearing in an earlier story on the 10 O'Clock News. Wall says he had a confidential conversation with Area B Commander William Celester in summer of 1982. Wall wouldn't say what he told the grand jury today but he does not deny that Celester told him the rape had occurred at the Silver Shield.
[Wall] Armstead is again I believe reporting to the federal grand jury information that had been relayed to him. What we have is an issue of credibility and right now I tend to believe Armstead's version of the story. [Reporter] Deputy Superintendent Celester has already testified and denies he ever told either Wall or Armstead that Garcia reported the rape to him. So with the exception of Detective Jose Garcia, the U.S. Assistant Attorney has now brought the same old cast of policemen before the grand jury. And it appears that no new witnesses have yet been called, even though as we've reported earlier, two policemen now tell us that Garcia told them the incident did occur and that he was a witness. For the 10 O'Clock News, I'm David Boeri.
